Default Looking for Mac Music Software

I just purchased an iMac to run as my main computer. I'm looking for the following Mac-compatible software:
    - An audio editor along the lines of SoundForge
    - An online music subscription service along the lines of Rhapsody that is NOT iTunes (where I could listen to full songs as much as I want)

    Any ideas?

For an editor, Audacity is a free download. (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

Also you can use the web version of Rhapsody on your iMac.

Yup, Audacity is not bad for freeware. If you are looking to buy with a few more features, Peak LE is nice for editing.

Thanks, SNIC. I found a link there for some excellent freeware called SNIC's Gay Audio Editor. It's a very animated, colourful program. I never knew there were so many shades of turquoise!

Didn't your iMac come with GarageBand? I use that for everything, and I'm actually using it to record my band's new CD. Well the music anyway, the drums and vocals we're doing at a real studio.

I used to use Audacity several years ago. I liked it a lot. There weren't many things I couldn't do then that I wanted to do.

Chucker, I bought Peak LE and used that for a while. I was so impressed I decided to keep it as my main audio editor.

I wanted to try Logic, but I didn't know anyone anyone that would let me hang with them and try it out/show me how it all worked.

Yes, it did. I use GB for demos and stuff but not for regular recording. Not that I'm there yet, but I wanted a high-powered "engine" that could do just about anything.

BTW, I'm looking forward to hearing that CD. Let me know when it's done.

Tell you what, SBH, I can't believe what Reaper does and that it's FREE! Crazy! My son's former band recorded their EP at a professional studio in Tulsa where the guy used Reaper. I got a nice tutorial on how it works and was quite impressed.

    --- --- ---

In the end, I wound up with the following setup:
    - Software -- MOTU Digital Performer 6
    - Interface -- MOTU 8pre (it came with its own software, but I decided to upgrade to DP6)
    - Audio Editor -- Peak LE, then Peak Pro (got an offer to go from LE to Pro Suite for only $200, which is about $800 off the original price; did it, incurred the wrath of my wife, but it was worth it)
