Problem gamblers sue casinos for $3.5 bln

Are you kidding me!!! I'm going to sue you because you failed my personal responsibility needs

TORONTO (Reuters) - Thousands of problem gamblers in have launched a $3.5 billion class action lawsuit in Ontario, saying they were allowed into provincially run casinos despite signing up for a program that should have denied them entry.

According to the CBC's website, the suit was filed earlier this week in Toronto, claiming the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. did not fully enforce a "self exclusion" program that allows problem gamblers to ban themselves from casinos.

Those who sign up for the program are photographed and their personal information is stored in binders at all of the province's casinos.

If program members are caught trying to enter a casino they can be arrested for trespassing.

According to the CBC, gamblers who had signed up for the program said it was not working, including one who returned frequently for years after signing up for the program.

Awesome, this fits right in with the new progressive thinking movement. Nobody will have any personal responsibility. This is great!

Of course, there is the slight possibility these nuts will lose thier case as they did their $$$$$$!

I've got no idea how the Canadian legal system works, but I can't imagine any US casino starting such a program.

I heard something about a gal suing a Vegas casino for serving her booze and encouraging her to gamble. She lost a considerable amount of money. She's a lawyer. She should be shot.

I'll have to do the same to Coca-Cola then. Retarded suits. As someone who works in a casino, I don't see how this will fly-of course with our legal system, who knows. Most casinos have signs posted on their ads/at the casino for numbers you can call if you have a gambling problem. They also have a system where you can "ban" yourself from going to a casino. If you violate this, it is in essence trespassing and you get arrested for it.

Simply unbelievable. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

This is the type of bullshit lawsuit that will be won resulting in an overhaul of the system which will lead to massive lines at casinos as every person is I.D.'d to ensure that the .0003% of the clientele who are on this list do not get in.

The only thing that hasn't happened yet but I am sure is right around the corner...is people suing the auto manufacturers when they get speeding tickets. Can't wait for that one. "My client has been given a vehicle that travels upwards of 120mph however there is no road in North America that these speeds can be used. This is clearly reckless endangerment of my client and the manufacturer needs to take responsibility."

You know what...the Casinos should give those angry customers 3 billion dollars......because you know where all that money is going to end up anyway

Uh, dude, this IS what they're sueing over, they say it doesn't work.

Stupid suit, but even dumber to have that "self ban" system. You put something in place and say it'll work in X way, then you open yourself up to liability if it doesn't work that way.

Unlike the peanut airline suit, I think this is crap. HOWEVER, also unlike the peanut airline suit, depending on the self ban program and how it's worded, this one may have actual teeth. Thank God it's in Canada...

US Casinos (at least those in Vegas) also have a self exclusion program.

I'm a dealer at a Casino here in the U.S. All Casino's have a self exclusion program. The only problem is, it doesn't apply to all casino's, just the particular casino that the person "86'd" themselves from, and all of the related properties.

It absolutely kills me to see people trying to play catch up a the blackjack tables. People have no sense of personal responsibility. They always blame the dealer, or because someone didn't play their hand right.

    A total bunch of losers.

    .
This is Harrah's policy (I think they're the biggest casino company in the States).

    Self Restriction/Self-Exclusion

Our "self-restriction" program allows a person to request not to receive direct marketing by Harrah's owned, managed, or operated properties, as well as be denied credit and check cashing privileges. Our "self-exclusion" program allows a guest to request to have all privileges, including play privileges denied at all Harrah's owned, managed, or operated properties. Forms to request self-restriction or self-exclusion are available at all Harrah's owned, managed, or operated properties or by calling 1-800-694-9960.
