Default China consuming twice what its ecosystems can supply

China is now consuming more than twice as much as what its ecosystems can supply sustainably, having doubled its needs since the 1960s, a new WWF report said Tuesday.

China now utilises 15 percent of the world's total biological capacity, said the report, which is published jointly by the WWF and the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development.

The report found that the Chinese had an average ecological footprint of 1.6 hectares in 2003, the most recent year for which figures are available.

This means that each person needs 1.6 hectares of biologically productive land to support their lifestyle demands.

While this is still lower than the world average of 2.2 global hectares per person, it "nonetheless presents challenges, considering China's large population and the robust economic development," said the report.

"If China were to follow the lead of the United States, where each person demands nearly 10 hectares of productive area, China would demand the available capacity of the entire planet.

"This is likely to be a physical impossibility for China, and for the other nations of the world," said the report.

If on the other hand China could, in its development, also balance environmental needs, it could "lead the way for the world as a whole," the report added.

"It's a critical period in the coming 20 years for China to realise its sustainable development, which is determined by important indicators including the balance between the utilization efficiency of natural resources and the Earth's regeneration capacity improvement," said Zhu Guangyao, secretary general of the Chinese council.

    yeah.

i think our biggest environment issues come down to overpopulation.

i walk by the freezer section of my superstore and look at the fish freezer full of the most amazing food. everything from tuna, to salmon, crab, giant scallops.

i can't help but to think we live in a time of embarrising riches. and i can't help thinking that there is no frickin way this sort of volume of consumption can go on like this.

not to feed 6 billion people at western standards.

i'm not suggesting a course of action or even a judgement on us but i do see a world of hurt ahead.

90% of the large fish in the ocean are gone. Salmon populations are collapsing. Global fisheries are predicted to be completely eradicated by the middle of the century. We're killing the oceans, plain and simple.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

"ninety percent of the fish in the ocean are gone"?

    Gawd, that's funny.

    Jan, you're just delusional.

I'm going to try and get a good start on knocking down the other ten this summer when the albacore come to tuna town off the oregon coast in July. Limits are 25 per person. Our boat should rack in a hundred....each day.

Based over info from the last 50 years and the beginnings of industrialised fishing. This article makes for some scary reading.

I knew what he was referencing when he said it because I read that article when it came out a few years ago (or more). We discussed it quite a bit on a premier NW fishing website I'm on that includes many marine biologists, oceanographers, state representatives fishery managers and of course a few thousand knucklehead fishermen like me. I was probably harsh with my response when in fact my real beef is not with Jan but those statistics. I think they're biased to say the very least and so do many experts. It's national geographic ya know? They have a pretty strategic angle here. You can't deny the decline, but those numbers aren't trustworthy.

Salmon populations aren't "collapsing" either. That's absurd. They're regulated so stringently for both sport and commercial that they will never have any problems. Summer season opens next week and we're expecting a record run. Lots of 5 year fish on the way back up. It's cyclical, and the runs highly dependable. We usually don't have a summer season to fish at all but they've opened it up due to surplus.

    "collapsing"? ...don't think so.

Sounds like you should lighten up. When he said large fish I think he meant large when full grown. Not all fish get large when fully grown. Uh, duh?
