    Default Guitar mad scientist's-Unite!

Hey everyone. If any of you are like me, youv'e probably done some pretty weird stuff with guitars! Like Eddie as well as Brian May, I started playing guitar at an early age. Classically trained on piano, self taught on guitar, but thats not what this thread is about. Like Ed and Brian, I was and still am a perpetual tinkerer. I want to hear about all the weird mods you guys have done to your guitars, or other string instruments for that matter. Iv'e had plenty of failures, but also quite a few were a sucess. Things Iv'e made include:
A sustainer from a Dimarzio single coil (later revised with heavier guage wire as the first one cought fire a little. You can still smell the burnt insulation in the body cavity!) and one of those cheapie fender 9 volt plastic practice amps.
A bonded condenser mic/metal plate body mount ambient pickup. very cool sound. Kind of metallic reverby. Jim Beam fueled invention.
A talkbox from an old tube Bush phono amp, a kitchen funnel, plastic tubing, and a reclaimed PA horn. Sounded great when the tubes were cook'n!(Do you feel like we do?)
Made my own Leslie rotating speaker.
Wired in a MXR phase 90 circuit into a Strat with one of those three way push/pull knobs to activate, deactivate, and control the speed. Also per a website I found, clipped a couple of the connections in the phase circuit which reduces the intensity of the sweeps. Just highlights the notes enough. This was a keeper.
And the usual screwing around with pickups. In the early ninties in Vancouver there were tons of little music shops that had alot of used pickups. Some were swapped 'case they fed back. I just took 'em home and potted them in wax and some sounded great. Those that did'nt I would mix and match the magnets and coils, and the result was some are spectacular sounding. But then again some sound comparable in sound quality to that Wendy's drive thru. Anyway. Let's hear your experiences.

The wackiest mod I ever did was to a body. Found an Exsplorer body at a yard sale with a big hole cut out of it. Little thought, some drop ceiling wire, and a Chinese spider broach, and walla!

I designed and built this hollow body from scratch out of birch plywood and spare parts I had left over from other builds. It's kind of a Wolfgang meets Telecaster. If you want to see the making of it step by step, click here: http://www.littlemanproductions.com/makingblondie1.html

Acoustically, it sounds like a thin body acoustic (IE: Kramer Ferrington or a Teleacoustic.) So a late night inspiration can be worked out and played without making too much noise. Plugged in on a clean channel it sounds like an acoustic with a soundhole pickup in it - very nice. The pickup gets some good vibration and tone from the acoustic chamber. Cranked up it sounds just as good, maybe a tad thinner than others. But it's so solid construction-wise that you don't get the plywood sound you think you might. Of course, I'm not a tone freak when it comes to guitar woods - I've built them out of solid White Oak and lightweight Agathis - I like 'em all.

    I was thinking it'd be kinda thin sounding...sounds like it's a Tele/Telecoustic hybrid. Sounds cool...and looks cool!

i think the only thing considered a little weird i've done with a guitar is swap the volume and last tone pot on a strat, so basically the volume was where the tone is and the tone was where the volume is, it was purely because i didnt like the placing of the volume....it did fool some people when they picked it up...lmao
other than that the usual pickup swaps and replacement parts etc...my VHI tribute guitar had 5 different pups in the first month....currently it has a gibson burstbucker III in it, but ya never know when the mood strikes me i may just swap it out.

    Very nice!
I think the Strat knob and input jack are a nice touch.

ve wired the pickups in both my Ibanez AR500 and Epi LesPaul Custom directly to the volume pots and installed a killswitch button(ala buckethead's guitars) in both , where the tone pot drill holes are.

my killswitch button is wired to the input jack then volume pots , when you press down you ground out the signal.

you can make some really cool techno and scratch effects with it.

the cool thing with mine is, if you run a couple of distortion pedals along with already overdriven amp, you get a really cool tone from the guitar with the kill switch engaged, although the output is VERY low.
