    Default Re-wiring my Wolfgang...

So I'm thinking of re-wiring my main Wolfgang. I disconnected the tone pot a couple of years ago, so it's sitting there unused. I want to re-wire it so that the old tone pot will serve as a neck pickup volume. That way I'll have a master volume, and neck volume.

So make sure I'm doing this right....I've gotta run the neck pup's lead to the 3-way switch back to the control cavity, wire it up to the pot, and then take it back up to the 3-way, right?

Anyone have a stock Wolfgang schematic for me to look at?

How about doing it as a push-pull for a coil tap, Jedi?

Have you had good results with coil-tapping Wolfgangs, AT? Doesn't change the normal sound of the humbucker at all, does it?

The Wolfgang pickups are by no means perfectly ideal for coil tapping. The reason Peavey changed the voicings for the HP Special was because they wanted to do coil taps as a standard feature, but the Wolfgang pups just weren't bright or round enough in the mids. Still, the tones aren't necessarily bad, they just aren't definite Strat or Tele type tones.

I've done coil taps on a few Wolfies--always with a push-pull pot--and have yet to notice a significant difference in tone when using the humbuckers in their normal mode. I must admit, however, that the Wolfies with coil taps are more of my specialty or modified axes, and they get played less than others.

Well I decided not to wait around for a push-pull pot and ended up wiring in the new neck volume control. Works perfect.

Thanks, AT. I've got my new Strat for all the strat tones I need, I'll just stick to the wolfie's humbuckers.

You certainly can't go wrong with the stock Wolf pups. I've always been amazed at how those three simple settings offer so much diversity in tone.
