Pros and cons with the 5150 or 6505

First off....thanks to everyone for the response on my last post a week ago.
Just wondering about the knock on the 5150 was the clean channel....was it really that bad? what wasn't good about it? what was good about it?

I clean mine up the clean channel with a Boss eq pedal. I love it the 5150II.

Wasn't this already discussed in your last thread?

The 5150 wasn't designed to have the clean sounds of a Roland Jazz Chorus.
IMO, to say it's a "high gain" amp is an understatement ... it has insane gain!

After the first run of 5150's, Peavey introduced the 5150 II's which incorporated EQ's for both channels and possibly other features that helped the amp produced cleaner sounds.

I'm guessing the 6505 is the same as the 5150 II (?) ... I dunno.

The 6505 is the 5150 and the 6505+ is the 5150 II

The 5150II has a little less gain then the 5150. That is the only tonal difference from it. The clean channel on the 5150 II is way better because it has a different gain stage from the extra tube in it to actually produce an allright clean sound. The 5150 has the clean sound traveling through all 5 gain stages, just like the lead channel. I don't know but I really like my 5150 II

for a clean channel i just use a different amp....i switch using an a/b box i built myself, theres no point in even trying to clean up a 5150 its never gonna sound great. those things were made to rock, and its something they do VERY well indeed....when cranked.

There is a significant difference in the clean channel from the 5150 (6505) to the 5150 II (6505+), and the extra tube is the reason. On the 5150 head I found myself having to pull the pre-gain way down (below 2) to get it "clean," but then the tone would have no balls. When pushing it higher you'd start to get something of a "bark." On the combo and 5150 II head you can push the pre-gain a lot harder and still stay relatively clean. Plus, the separate EQs, Presence, and Resonance controls for each channel on the 5150 II makes it well worth it, I think (since I never ideally wanted to use the same EQ settings on the clean and dirty channels).
