Wow, has our society has become this oversensitive??

Rachael Ray's ad dumped because of scarf

A Dunkin' Donuts commercial featuring TV chef Rachael Ray has been ditched after critics accused her of dressing like a terrorist in the ad.

Ray, who was announced as the company's new spokeswoman last year, appears in the commercial wearing a black-and-white scarf, alleged to be symbolic of a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

Fox news columnist Michelle Malkin explains the garment " ...has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos.

"The apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts bosses first dismissed complaints, claiming Ray's black-and-white wrap was merely misinterpreted, but an ensuing firestorm forced them to quickly pull the ad from rotation.

A statement from company executives reads, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot.

"Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

CANTON, Mass. Dunkin' Donuts said Wednesday it stopped running an online advertisement featuring Rachael Ray after complaints that a fringed black-and-white scarf that the celebrity chef wore in the ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The coffee and baked goods chain said the ad that began appearing online May 7 was pulled over the past weekend because "the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee."

In the spot, Ray wears the scarf around her neck and holds an iced coffee while standing in front of trees with pink blossoms.

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf looked similar to the black-and-white checkered kaffiyeh, the traditional Palestinian scarf. Critics who fueled online complaints about the ad in blogs say such scarves have come to symbolize Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The kaffiyeh, Malkin wrote in a column posted online last Friday, "has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

A statement issued by Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Brands Inc., however, said the scarf had a paisley design, and was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot.

"Absolutely no symbolism was intended," the company said.

Dunkin' spokeswoman Michelle King said the ad appeared on the chain's Web site, as well as other commercial sites.

Malkin, in a posting following up on last week's column, said of Dunkin's decision to pull the ad, "It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

Ray, host of the Food Network television program "30 Minute Meals" as well as a syndicated daytime talk show, began appearing in ads for Dunkin' Donuts in March 2007. When Dunkin' announced the partnership, it said Ray would be featured in TV, print, radio and online spots in a campaign running through 2010.

Any reason to get Rachel Ray off TV is fine with me. What an annoying woman. Her voice could curdle cement.

    BUT...This is really stupid

Wow, Rachael Ray's a terrorist sympathizer! I wonder if this news is going to hurt her show's ratings?

any possible misperception has been turned into a terrorist education with the dropped commercial. Leave this alone and close to no one thinks about this stupid shit. Ditch the commercial and all of the sudden you are teaching terrorist faision. people who didn't know about the scarf's signifigance Now DO.

I wonder if anybody would have really noticed if they didn't write an article about it. Why is it everyday someone gets offended by something and has to put it on the news or in the paper? Is it so hard just to shut the hell up, ignore it and move on with your day.

You are exactly right. Extreme nuttiness has no political bounds and it is destroying this country and the ability of people to have reasonable debates and discussions. If we don't learn to make reasonable decisions(you don't get everything your way but neither does the other guy) the next war we fight will be a CIVIL one.

    You wouldn't?

I'd endorse Tampax, Depends and Preparation H in the same ad if I were paid enough. Rachel Ray being spokeswoman for a doughnut company is the most American part of this story.
