    Default Canadian Sam Article

Searched around didn't see it anywhere...Zeppelin? You can't be serious....

Sammy Hagar to hit studio with guitar hero Joe Satriani and ex-Van
    Halen bassist
    http://canadianpress.com

Sammy Hagar has a new supergroup that includes a virtuoso guitarist
and a fellow Van Halen alumnus, but fans eager to see the so-called
Red Rocker sing alongside the six-string hero he's most famously
associated with shouldn't hold their breath.

It seems a peace settlement in the war of wills between Hagar and
Eddie Van Halen could be years away, if it arrives at all.

"I love Eddie, but we don't love each other," Hagar said during an
    interview Thursday.

"I heard that he got cleaned up again. Hopefully he stays that way
and doesn't die, because before we both die we have to be friends
    again.

"But like I said, people have to be level-headed and have to be
healthy before you can settle a feud."

Eddie Van Halen's battles with drug and alcohol addiction are legend,
marring past shows with Hagar and delaying the start last year of a
reunion tour with original singer, and Hagar's predecessor, David Lee
    Roth.

Instead of waiting for that friendship to be repaired, Hagar has
teamed with acclaimed guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Pepper
drummer Chad Smith, and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. The
group, code-named Chickenfoot, will enter the recording studio just
    before Labour Day.

"We've written eight, nine songs. We just got to go in the studio
    Sept. 1," Hagar said.

"When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin. It's as good as that.
I know that's a mighty bold statement... We could rival Zep."

Hagar, 60, stills looks remarkably like he did during his time with
Van Halen - suntanned and goateed with that trademark mop of curly
    blonde hair.

In town following a show at Casino Rama, north of Toronto, with his
"party band" The Wabos, Hagar took up residence for the day in a
downtown hotel to promote his latest career turn as a spirits
    connoisseur.

Halen fans are no doubt familiar with the song "Cabo Wabo", a track
from the multi-platinum 1988 album "OU812" that sang the virtues of
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Hagar's love of all that is Cabo has seen him
open cantinas bearing the name, and now he's spending the summer
    selling Cabo Wabo Tequila.

The brand, with its origins in Hagar's desire to serve a local, high-
end tequila at his cantina in Cabo San Lucas, grew over the years,
eventually gaining recognition and robust sales in the United States.
Last year, Hagar sold an 80 per cent stake in the company to
multinational spirits company Campari for a reported US$80 million.

"It wasn't planned. All this happened step by step. Every time I
turned around there was a new opportunity for it," Hagar said.

"Everyone thought it was a gimmick. It's an expensive tequila (a 750
ml bottle retails for $71.20 in Canada). They thought, what does this
    guy know about premium tequila?"

Apparently Hagar has even convinced bassist Anthony, who was known
for drinking Jack Daniels whisky straight from the bottle onstage
during his Van Halen years, to quaff his tequila while performing.

The two have remained close, and perform together often, since the
Hagar incarnation of Halen finally folded after a reunion in the late
    1990s.

When the band reunited last year to tour with original singer David
Lee Roth, Anthony was replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang.

Although it's "great that they finally did the reunion with Dave,"
Hagar said he had no desire to take in the show.

"Mikey should have been there. It's ridiculous," he said.

"(Seeing the show) just wouldn't interest me in the least, all the
hoopla and all that around something without it being the original."

As for the Van Halen vs. Van Hagar debate, Hagar is content to let
the fans choose their favourite and listen to the old recordings.

"I'm really not interested in being in that band right now. I'm so
much more interested in our little Chickenfoot project," Hagar said.

"To me that's 10 times Van Halen, because it's functional, we all
    like each other."

Go Sam! I love Satch but I hope he slows down the speed a little. He has some great solefull bluesy riffs inside him. Can't wait.

Sam really needs to shut the fuck up. Led Zeppelin? what a fucking arrogant prick. The guy needs to go back to doing what he does best....selliing tequila and putting up shelter for fired washed up bassists.

Alright....now all the haters got nothing to say!

Mike was never fired he was replaced atleast that is what he read on the Interenet. 30+ years with EVH and Ed couldnt handle the situation like a man..... shame on him! Dont trash Sam yet until you here the music.... dont forget what he did for EVH back in 1985... he extended his career for an extra 15 years... This new project will ROCK!

Very cool that a studio album will be coming with Satch, Mike, and Chad power-trioing behind Sam. I still think a better title than Chickenfoot needs to be researched.

But as good as Zeppelin? That's reaching a bit high, LOL. Nobody reaches Zeppelin-good. NOBODY. Not the Who, not the Stones, neither era of Van Halen...nobody.

Come on now, Red. Let's stay in reality. Hit the studio and release the sucker, great. And don't forget to tour it with the same players. I guess the Wabos are gonna take a half year off? When you do tour it, let's not make one of those multi-set lineups of your extended entourage....the Wabos, Los Tres Gusanos, The Other Half, Mad Anthony Express, Chickenfoot, The Kitchen Sinks.

Just do a whole tour with the one outfit, per album, please. Satriani on axe, Anthony on bass? Yep, we'll be there. Relax.

Sam has always been an exaggerator in interviews. He starts making big declarations about whatever his current project is. He should be careful with things like the Zep comment, but I get that it was simply born out of enthusiasm and excitement for the project.

I am indeed quite curious about this Chickenfoot thing.

I think the project will go over well like a Lead Zepplin. I don't think anyone but us gives a shit.

Hey Sam I know Led Zeppelin I grew up with their records. Your no Zep. But I like the whole idea and I will be there and buy the music. I remember I heard DLR in about 78 on a radio interview say that VH wanted to be the American version of Led Zep it kinda ticked me off back then too. Good luck Chickenfoot!

I agree. There will be very very few people interested in this thing. Even if it's really good, and it might be, there won't be anybody getting really excited about this thing. The truth is, and Dave spent 22 years living with this fact, that if Sam isn't singing with VH, nobody is paying attention.

I wouldn't compare Sam's solo career with that of Dave because people do care. The industry may not but his solid base of loyal fans care, something Dave didn't have. Dave had early industry support but he could turn that into a loyal support. In fairness, Dave was trying to continue a solo career during a tidal shift in music. By 96 'Seattle Rock' had run it's course and Sam was able to find a sustainable market for the Wabo's and 'Party Rock'.

If Sam is going to compare the new band to Zep (which he shouldn't) they should consider a name change. I don't see music scholars comparing Chickenfoot to Led Zep.

This new effort needs a website to keep fans updated on the studio work and maybe a contest to name the band. They should be trying to build this thing now not after the release if they want to do some kind of arena tour this winter.
If you want a little peace, sometimes you got to fight
We got to walk through the darkness
Before we stand in the light.

If you're a fan of Sam's then you realize that he does get a little jacked for the new things he's doing.

If you're not a fan, then i guess the Led Zeppelin comment is more bulletin board material.

    CD and tour please.

Nothing wrong or offensive in what Sam said in that clip. Sam haters here will not like anything that is said that would reflect negatively on Eddie or the current form of Van Halen.
