Could Van Halen music be made into a musical a-la We Will Rock You the Queen thing? If it were, would you go?

LMAO think Diamond Dave would be the perfect Broadway Star. I can't wait to see him in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Or is that Dave and the Amazing Technicolor Spangled Toreador Jacket?

Perhaps my favourite musical by an established musical legend is Robert Goulet's, "Red Ships of Spain". In my opinion if Goulet can bring the magic back later in his career with that tour-de-force, so can the complete cast of what for the sake of argument we'll call "Dutch Treat: The Van Halen Story", as produced by Jim Steinman.

This has win written all over it. And sure, free beer. What the hell.

The flaw with this is the relatively limited subject matter of the songs themselves, in order to string together any sort of narrative structure like the Billy Joel musical. The songs would need to move a fairly basic plot-line along. If it was to tell the story of the band, this could be problematic.

The alternative would be to more or less craft a storyline, then graft the VH tunes onto it. And let's face it, anyone that has seen the simply God-awful "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with Peter Frampton and The BeeGees knows that this is a particularly difficult thing to pull off successfully. Hell, the producers had BEATLES tunes as source material!

Chef, I've thought long and hard about this one and I guiess I see what you mean.

The thing is, the music and the story fit if you start from the true beginnings of Van Halen the family, you know with the Dutch stuff and the wooden shoes and the windmills and the horking and all that? Then they get on a huge wooden boat built by Jan VH and come to the good ol' US of A. Somehow they finally make enough money for guitar strings and become huge stars. You can sense the pathos and the ethos and the mentos and all that, right?!? We could even work Nazis in somehow.

The history of Van Halen opens up a whole slew of story possibilities. You bring that story together with tunes like Right Now and Jump..the boat could get them to the States through...get this... Panama...but done ON STAGE. You get the picture?

Let's make this puppy move Chef. It's time for some VH related broadway show action.

They could do a classic boy meets girl, boy loses girl story just by using some of Van Halen's better songs:

    First Act:
    Scene 1:
Girl comes walking down the street (Pretty Woman)
    Scene 2:
Boy becomes smitten (Love Walks In)
    Scene 3:
Girl rejects boy (Why Can't This Be Love)
    Scene 4:
Boy resolves to get girl (I'll Wait)

    Second Act:
    Scene 1:
Boy makes a stand and fights for girl (Right Now)
    Scene 2:
Girl thinks she may love boy too (When It's Love)
    Scene 3:
Boy wins girl (Dancing In the Street)
    Scene 4:
Boy and girl are happy together (Feels So Good)

    Third Act:
    Scene 1:
Girl has second thoughts (Not Enough)
    Scene 2:
Boy and girl drift apart (Dreams)
    Scene 3:
Girl leaves boy (Can't Stop Loving You)
    Scene 4:
    Boy kills himself (Jump)

    I'd go see that.
