    Default Annual Memorial Day thread

For those of you who (like me) think Memorial Day is a lot more than just beaches & barbeques....

And to all the members here who are veterans or currently serving...THANK YOU!!!

    Thanks Chris

    What Is A Veteran?

A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or

reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank

check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount

of "up to, and including his life."

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this

country today, who no longer understand that fact.
A little more volume in the headphones please.

Many service guys in my family.... my maternal grandfather was a flight surgeon in WWII, my paternal grandfather served in WWII as well. Father was in the guard during Vietnam, his unit never left the US though. My husband is a Lt Col in the Air Force. (he is now active duty reserves) Lots of friends local and far away as well.

I too, believe in the celebration of "Memorial Day" for the proper reasons.

Here is one of my favorite quotes....

"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
    It is the soldier,
    Who salutes the flag,
    Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."
    Model Citizen, Zero Discipline

    From Blackfive:

    http://www.blackfive.net/main/2008/0...tes-of-he.html

    The words to "Taps" are:

    Day Is Done,
    Gone the Sun,
    From the Earth,
    From the Hill,
    From the Sky,
    All Is Well,
    Safely Rest,
    God Is Nigh

When Taps is played at dusk, it has a completely different meaning than when Taps is played during the day. No soldier really wants to hear it played during daylight. For when the bugle plays Taps in the daylight...that means a soldier has fallen...There is a belief among some that Taps is the clarion call to open the gates of heaven for the fallen warrior and letting them know to "Safely Rest"...
Thanks to all who served and a special thanks to the men & women of the 7th Infantry Division:

Went down and helped out at Arlington West for the day, as I sporadically do from time to time. They did their annual candlelight vigil for the holiday this evening, but the local chapter of Veterans for Peace sets up thousands of crosses representing each casualty of the Iraq war every Sunday 52 weeks a year since the war began. Now there are many similar weekly memorials across the country...but the original began here in Santa Barbara.

Fuck politics, fuck left or right, fuck rhyme or reason. Old men make decisions, children die, it's been the way of the world for time beyond measure.

As a wiser man than I once said...a finer world is a small thing to ask.

    That's it.

In memoriam to the kids who gave up their lives.

Amen to that. What bugs me is the people that use it as an excuse to get hammered.

Here's a big, THANK YOU!, to all of the fighting men and women that have given their lives in service to this great country.

My grandad served in the Army, and was at Pearl Harbor that fateful day. He's now 92 and still kicking. Thanks to him and the many people who have given us this great country!

My Grandfather, his brothers (WW2) my dad, his brothers (Vietnam), my cousin's husband (Iraq) many friends and their families (Gulf War and Iraq) A huge THANKS is somehow not enough. However it's all I have. Along with the understanding and appreciation of knowing that were it not for them and all the others like them I may not be sitting here today watching my kids play in the pool and helping my husband with the burgers. I fly my flag and fly it proudly 24/7 365 days a year.
