Default Almost 20 years since OU812 was released

I checked today and OU812 will be 20 years old in a few days...wow. I can't believe it.

What a great time to be a VH fan, me and my buddies went up to the mall after school and picked it up and the guy at record town was like "this cd is selling like crazy...we've sold 15 an hour all day long".

Great CD..I didn't notice the "bad production" until I started coming to these boards but aside from that I love this disk, very diverse songs...the rockers rock and you can't beat the harmonies on some of this stuff. I loved Mine all Mine from day one and still do same with AFU and Cabo Wabo. Really the only bad part for me is the 2nd half of Sucker, I love the begining but about 1/2 way through it looses steam for me. I've always dug Source of Infection..I don't know why. I guess I just see the band jamming and sammy walking in and doing some "scat" lyrics or something.

I've really started to like Black and Blue over the last few years, the verssion on BOBW is so much better production wise I just think it really makes the song sound great..same with WIL and FSG. FWYS I didn't get at first but I dig it now.

just a great time to be a VH fan, great CD...MTV loved these guys back then..lots of cool stuff goin on and they were kicking ass. I've got some MOR shows on cassette and they're all smokin...

I'm just gonna sit back and blast me some OU812 right now.

This was the album that got me into Van Halen. I was in 5th grade when I bought it in March 1989 while on vacation in Hawaii.

To this day it is still my personal fave, although F.U.C.K. is real close.

This was Van Halen at its best for me. Very diverse song selection and some of the bands all time best!

The poster for the album cover is framed in my office. God I wish Van Hagar was still rocking!

Agreed. My favorite VH album as well. As soon as I hear the beginning of Mine all mine I get chills and have to listen to the whole CD

    20 Years

A coupla years ago, i was outside having a smoke with a lovely young lass who was bartending down the pub. She asked what VH was like with Dave. Yadda, yadda, yadda ... she goes "I was born in 1985." I was speechless.

20 years, that's just staggering to me.

Let's see, 20 years ago I was planning on getting married (and not to the present Mrs VHR), had disposable income (what was that?) and gas was cheap.

Although I have only owned OU812 for about 15 years, it could very well be my favorite Sam era song with VH.

The most underrated legitimate VH disk of all.

If only they'd pumped in some heavier deep end.

Regardless, other than the signature ballad, (I prefer Feels so Good over WIL, because I just can't stand WIL) this is a solid album all the way through. Mine all Mine is one of Sam's best songs. AFU is one of Van Halen's most overlooked tracks. I dig Apolitical Blues. Great album, much better flow and songwriting by both Ed and Sam than FUCK or even 5150. Van Hagar's second best album after Balance.

    IMO.

    Twenty years. Goddamn. I'm old.

that is interesting that you prefer Balance and OU812 to 5150 and FUCK. Most fans would disagree.

Well, Van Squalen is actually part of a group of people here who hate VH but post here anyways. I know that's why I'm here. Well, that and the apple turnovers.

I bought this on my way home from school the day it was released back in my senior year of high school.

Yes, I do have my 20 year reunion this summer.

    (And, no, I'm not going).

    Man, I feel old.

Weird that there are posters here that weren't even born when this came out....(and bass players).

I don't think VH fans are that much different from fans of other bands in this respect. Ask 100 AC/DC fans of various ages which album is their favorite and I bet you would get answers all over the place, although probably biased towards Back in Black. Personally, of the Sam era, I prefer OU812 and F.U.C.K. to Balance and 5150, but I listen to all of them.

Depends what fans you mean. I think some of the "new" fans won over by 5150 would prefer that sound and that album than some of the older fans who might prefer an album like Balance.

20 year reunion. Our 20 year reunion was back in 04, but the high society snobs of our class all but priced most of the class out by holding the event at The Breakers West (no, we didn't go either). Fine, I didn't want to see those assholes again anyway.

Which bass player might that be?

Summer 1988 was an exciting time for me. I had just graduated high school and I was seeing VH for the first time on the Monsters of Rock Tour. That is still the best show I've ever seen. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
