Default Van Halen Mohegan Sun Review 5/20/08

I Just got back from the Mohegan Sun Show and can honestly say that of the shows that I've seen on this tour (7 in total)... this one really blew them all away, by far.
I will admit that I had front row seats right in front of Eddie, but I've had
3rd and 7th row seats on previous shows. I'll go to my fave first...Eddie was as spectacular in playing form as he's ever been, and played almost all of the songs to a tee, and occasionally embellished midstream to make them even better, (which I didn't think was possible.) A big plus was that he tightened up eruption and cathedral the way he did back in the day, and didn't have the gain issues that he had earlier in the tour with cathedral.
He didn't jump around like the wild man of old, but I think this only made the musical side better. The big smile and attitude were still there, in full.
Dave was was sincerely hammy, and you could tell that he truly enjoyed every second that he was up there. It's hard not to watch the guy to the point of distraction as he's so friggin' entertaining.
Alex was also amazing and rock solid, as he's been all tour. My only issue with him is that he's almost buried under his drum rig. You see cymbals crashing and sticks flying, but it's hard to see the man himself. This has been a constant throughout the tour. He has got to be the most underrated rock drummer in rock history!
Then there's Wolf. He is really coming into his own and playing and seemingly getting better by the day. He's started to incorporate some pyrotechnic bass playing that I hadn't seen him do earlier and his vocals were very impressive. This brings up another subject.
For all of those who have been saying that the background vocals have been piped in, it's just not the case. Being right there in the front, I could hear an occasional warble in the harmonies which only comes when singing for real, and the same thing was present when Michael Anthony was running the bottom end helm. I've seen him plenty of times so that I can pretty much state that as fact.
Side notes: My girlfreind and I were in row A, seats 5 and 6 in the loop. For some reason, the four seats next to us toward the ramp remained empty for the first 8 songs. At the end of the first three song intro of "You really Got Me", "I'm The One" and "Runnin' With The Devil" Eddie plopped his pick into Dave's hat. Dave looked at him for a sec wondering what that was about, but then went on his merry way toward the ramp. When he got to the start of the ramp, he flipped his hat onto his head, dropping the pick at the base of the ramp. Somehow I guess that I was the only one that saw this, and walked over to where the pick was and grabbed it, all because 4 morons couldn't make it on time for the concert of a lifetime where they easily could have got it. When they finally showed up, a guy in the second row behind them got in their face saying, "How could you miss this!?"
The other thing is that I guess my ugly mug ended up on the big screen 3 times and a freind that I had't seen in 10 years recognized me. He met up with me later and said, "Yeah, I couldn't believe it, I saw three hot chicks (one - my girfriend) and then your friggin' face!" What a way for a reunion, Huh! I'll be looking for a DVD of this one if possible, so let me know if you can.
"Rock On! and enjoy the rest of the tour!!! -AL

I agree with everything he said. And yes I saw your ugly mug on the screen too. I only noticed though cause of your girlfriend. We had seats in sec. 2 row d seats 3-6, and the show was killer. This was my fourth of the 07 08 tour and by far the best. Edward kept his feet planted most of the night, only doing one small flying Eddie, Dave was Dave and great at it. Wolf was a bump on a log, at one point I even caught him rolling his eyes as if he was bored. Eddie played great and was very happy through out the show. No major sound issues at all. Alex was great, I even caught him singing along with Dave a few times. The crowd in the pit was pretty lame for the most part. Not to many people with their fists in the air, not even during ATBL. Dave was hamming it up for the cameras a lot more than past shows. He said nothing of filming the show, however there was a camera in the center of the arena hanging from the ceiling that appeared to have been used. There were a few times on the giant screen that it showed the entire stage from the vantage point of the back of the arena upper level. The cam I saw was similar to the one in NBA games that follows the length of the court.
I don't know what else can be said about the show. It was great. Here are a few pics. Enjoy.

Great show!!! I saw them at the first show in Mohegan but had better seats this time.

I can only echo what others have said since the start of this final leg of the tour. The tightness of the band was unreal!

Dave - He again showed why he is the best frontman of all-time. He did all the things that made him 'Dave'. Loved the stories that he told. He is singing the best I've ever heard him. For a guy in his early 50's, he's in great shape.

Eddie - Like I said after seeing clips of the shows after he came back, his playing is top-notch. He's in time, if he noodles a bit he comes back in the right place, the solo was the best he's done in ages, and he was lightning quick in the fast-paced songs. At one point, I thought to myself, THIS is the Eddie Van Halen that's been missing for some time. I was glad to see him enjoying himself on stage. Had some good moments interacting with Dave.

Alex - Technically flawless. This guy never makes an obvious mistake. Always in the pocket. As a drummer, I always enjoy his drum solo. I am always amazed at the precision and speed that he plays at.

Wolfgang - Kid continues to do a great job. I can see how at times he looks bored but he has his moments where he interacts a bit with the crowd. Anyway, we all know he is not the focal point of this tour. I do have to say he looks more comfortable up there compared to the beginning of the tour.

All in all, it was a great show. Even though I saw them earlier in the tour, I never get bored of watching the great ones.

Van Halen, thank you for coming back one more time!!!!

Let's see where this wild ride takes us next.

    Hey guys,

I went to the October Uncasville show and was thinking about going last minute to this one but didn't. Just curious, were there a lot of scalpers selling last minute tickets? I'm kind of regretting not going but I bailed.

If only every concert or even every form of entertainment could be like the show I saw last night. I had seen VH when they came to Mohegan in October and then saw them in Worcester in November and this was by the best of all of them. Hey EAS, there were a lot of scalpers, particularly near the sky entrance. Roth told a great story about losing money at the casino and a priest being sent to his room because the casino thought he was sucidal. The priest asked him if he could help him and roth replied, "i suppose sir, but I'm Jewish!" then roth went on to say that the priest tried to calm him down but left him by saying, "you stupid son of a bitch, you never hit with a 10 in blackjack!" One last note, on the side of the stage near ed's guitars there was a high def tv that was streaming what was being shown on the soundboard, which I hadn't seen at the other shows I went to. Perhaps that was part of the filming??? Anyway it was a KILLER SHOW!

I should have gone. I downloaded a show from this second leg and it is unbelievably good. A definite improvement with Eddie. He's back to where he once was. Hopefully someone recorded this show and puts it up for a bootleg at www.jamtothis.com!

Have to mirror what others said, this was a whole different animal compared to the october show.

We had better seating this time too, (section 14, Ed's side) but everything about this show was "on", unlike last time when Ed had his equipment malfunction and was all over the place technically. This time the band just kicked it, and kicked it hard. Brilliant.

Yep, scalpers everywhere and last minute bargains were there to be had too. A buddy and his wife came along last minute with my wife and I and they got some great seats cheap, almost as good as our seats bought way earlier, but about half the price of the box office. They also had an excellent time and altho not pure VH fanatics like us they said they would go again, but want to wait until the boys cut a new album. They may have to wait awhile for that and maybe forever, who knows...

As for the wife and I, we'll probably be at the Manchester show too.

I may go to the Rhode Island show Sunday night.

By the way guys, there is a new show up at http://www.jamtothis.com/showthread.php?t=34037 which is supposedly really good quality. I'm grabbing this one when I get home from work.

Sorry for the interruption, but I just don't get that at all. You're only as old as you feel, I'm 35 and dance around, headbang, throw my fist in the air all the time. My kids get a kick out of it. They say "My mom's so fun". I'm raising them right!!! Lol....I'll still be doing that stuff when I'm a grandma.

I agree. People are so hung up on age. Don't forget, Sammy was 38 when he joined Van Halen. I would have never thought that. It wasn't until I looked up his age that I knew.

I have friends who acted like old farts when they were in their early 20s. A lot of the time it's the person and not the age.

Me, too! My teenage daughter loves it. She tells all her friends she has the coolest mom on the planet... and tells me "You rock, mom." I got a new title the other day: "BFF Mommy."

The guy next to me had his fingers in his ears part of the night, there was a father and son in front of me who dad was about 35ish and son about 6 and they were rockin out harder than anyone else. Well accept for me, and the group I was with. There were also some in the 1st and 2nd rows dead center enjoying themselves. The best though was during ATBL I looked up to sec. 14 and in the isle about halfway up were 2 guys air guitaring like their lives depended on it. That was great. I remember when that was the norm at a VH show. I like this picture from last night. It is as if Eddie is reeling you in and Roth is putting a spear through you when you get close.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

That's great!! My kids (they're 10 and 5) always say "Turn it up mom, let's rock", whenever I'm listening to VH, or AC/DC.

I guess I get it from my dad, he's the same age as Sammy, and he's cool as shit!! Lots of fun!! My mom was too though. She took me to my first VH show when I was 11.
