Default Anyone ever get this problem with their hand or finger

I think I have tendonitis or something in my ring finger on my fret hand. I'll be soloing or something and I'll get a terrible pain in that finger all of a sudden. Seems like it's when my fingers are closer together playing than when they're stretched out further down the neck. My band took a couple weeks off from playing, so I figured I'd rest my hand and not play at all. Since we're practicing today, I started to play a little last night, hoping the rest helped. Nope it came back. I guess I'm going to go to the doctor. Shit maybe it's arthritis or something crazy like that, I don't know anymore. It almost feels like I have a broken bone in there, not that there is anyway possible that happened, but it kind of feels like that.

Anyone ever had problems with their hands or fingers like that?

Beware of carpal tunnel too! That thing is debilitating, go see a doctor that's the best you can do and the sooner the better!

Can you get that in a finger though? My hand feels fine except for the one finger.

At this point I have to go, just curious if anyone else had that issue. I would rather have my hand fall off than go to a doctor, but now it's starting to be an issue. I've been a bowler on a professional bowler (retired) as well as a guitar player for over 20 years, never had any issues with my hand, fingers, or wrist. So this is way out of left field.

    Do you bowl left handed?
If so, and depending on how often you bowl ... that may be a good possiblity of how your finger got injured.

    Do you were a ring?
    Maybe another possibility.

    Does it appear swollen (inflamed)?
Does it feel "tight" when you make a fist?
Could you have "jammed" it somehow?

I've jammed fingers before playing ball and it's usually a very slow healing process.

    Regardless ... I'd suggest a doctor visit.

I have problems in my left hand from a childhood accident. Only acts up every once and a while but when it does it feels like my fingers are locking up if that makes sense.

Dino, no I bowl righty, I'm just saying I've never had hand or wrist problems and I've been bowling since I was 9, and we're talking thousands and thousands of games.

I do wear my wedding ring on the fret hand, but I have been doing that for 8 years now. It's not that finger, and its not rubbing on the side of the finger that seems to hurt. I was thinking maybe the ring did it somehow, but I just can't see how. I'm thinking maybe I stretched it funny.

Not swollen at all, doesn't hurt when I make a fist. I just played guitar for an hour and it didn't hurt, but I was real careful with it.

Sadly I am probably going to have to see a doctor...joy.

Yes, go to the doctor. I hate seeing the doctor too. It seems like they ask you all the no-brainer questions you've already reviewed in your own head a thousand times, then tell you to either take some ibuprofen and come back or they send you to another doctor where you have explain your story all over again and answer the same dumb questions. I have found, however, that if you push your doctor and volunteer a lot of the info up front, he/she tends to work with you more.

But you (we) are of the age where weird things can start to creep up. You certainly don't want to find out it's Parkinson's or something, but it is important to get that kind of stuff ruled out.

    Good luck with it.

I think it can, my mother has carpal tunnel, it started with a finger either the ring finger or thumb then its your wrist, you MUST see a doctor as soon as as you experience the first pain, don't let it slip.
I just hope it's something else but be very careful with that.

Does it hurt just below the joint? I work for a hand specialist(therapist) in Fresno and I have kinda the same thing on my index just below the middle joint, my boss told me that i could have tendinitis in that area. Try a cortizone shot. It could be inflamation, and yes rest it!

Very odd that it's only in one finger. I wonder what this is.

I would've expected you to experience maybe a tingling sensation, numbness, etc. It doesn't sound like it's falling asleep. This is weird.

sounds like neuropathy or a pins and needles thing.

i'd tell you to get a good massage and make sure your spine is aligned and you have no neck or pinched nerve issues before the doc.

if that doesn't help, then you can always do the doctor thing. most hand and finger probelsm are related to cervical neck issues

you don't mention if you're ever injured your left hand or wrist.
old injuries have a nasty way of creeping back up on us and biting our ass's when we get older. i broke my left wrist several times when i was younger usually jumping off stuff (or more accuratley "falling" off stuff) and since about the age of 28 i get an "aching" sensation in my left forearm from time to time, usually its just a case of (for me anyway) taking some ibuprofen and easing off for a couple of days, i did alter my warm up routine as well to make things easier. before i even pick up a guitar for any length of time i soak my hand/forearm in warm/ moderatly hot water for a few minutes just to try to relax and open up anything that needs it then i just gently play chords and a few easy patterns until i feel im ready, sometimes it can take 45 minutes before im ready to play.
but this is just me and my circumstance, if i were you i would get checked out by a doctor and see what he has to say, heres hoping its nothing serious.

Well tonight near the end of the night at practice it started to hurt a little, I just played very carefully at the end. I don't even really know how to describe the pain, it's like the entire side of my finger. It feels like a nerve to me.

Nah I've never hurt my wrist, hand, nothing. I've never even broken so much as a finger before.

It's not pins and needles feeling, it just aches, feels like it's broken...I guess. And it's just the one finger, and it's fine otherwise. Just playing guitar when I really let loose. I can't imagine it's that serious, but we'll see. Hell maybe it's some form of arthritis.

I had something similar with my thumb on my fret hand years ago. Eventually I went to a doctor had it x-rayed and turned out I had chipped the bone right near a joint. The chip was probably less than a 16th of an inch in diameter about the size of a stright-pin head. Doc numbed it, made tiny incision and removed it. Healed up in a couple of days.

I never even remembered banging it on anything... could have just happened wrenching on a car or fixing something around the house.

Brett if your doctor can't figure it out make sure your wife doesn't have some sort of voodoo doll hidden and poking it with pins when your off jammin with the boys...
