Default Atleast 18 injured on a California Fair Ride

Several Injured in Collapse of California Carnival Ride
    Friday, May 16, 2008

    E-Mail Print Share:

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. — Emergency officials say three people have been severely injured in the collapse of a carnival ride at the fairgrounds hosting an annual jumping frog contest.

Dennis Townsend, a chief with the California state fire department, told The Associated Press another 14 fairgoers received lesser injuries.

He says they were injured when a type of swing ride collapsed shortly after 6 p.m. Friday. The ride has arms that fling out as they spin around an axis.

Susan Leininger, a supervisor at Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas, says the hospital has been alerted that it will receive patients. It has not been told how many.

The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee celebrates the Mark Twain story about a character and his frog, named Dan'l Webster.

It is located near the Gold Rush era town of Angels Camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills and bills itself as an "old-fashion county fair" with exhibits and a variety of entertainment.

The jumping frog finals are scheduled for Sunday.

Ironically, my son and I were right there last night, and 24 hours to the minute we were right next to that ride standing outside the haunted house, I shit you not.

This is why I don't ride the rides anywhere but Six Flags, they're insured.

Angels Camp. Damn, there's a burg I haven't thought of or passed through for a spell.

My Dad took us kids on a historical 'Gold Rush' trip all the way up Highway 49 once when I was but a wee lad. In a VW van camper. Ugh. Tahoe, Columbia, El Dorado, Diamond Springs, Nevada City, LOL.....Hell on four-bangin' wheels, that goddamned road trip to nowhere. Panning for gold is not all it's cut out to be.

And as far as those rickety midway Fair rides...duh. Thrillseekers beware. I'm shocked those traveling hackfests don't have ticket buyers sign waivers in this modern litigation age.

That said, there's nothing like a House of Mirrors teenaged gropefest.

Agreed. Some of these "county fair" set-ups (by the semi-reputable companies that allow pedestrians to trip over power cables) are far too accident prone to trust allowing one's self, let alone one's siblings to take a chance in hell riding them.

The maintenance factor is negligent at best, the safety measures faulty at worst. Plus it always adds some form of confidence to notice the fellow running the particular ride has not bothered to shave, shower or change his clothes in over a week.

These carnival companies have also never been known to invest in any safety program or dental coverage.

LOL describes every childhood vacation my father ever took us on. That man did not know the meaning of the word "vacation" They all seemed like a lot of work to me.

That said, I live not too far from Cedar Point Amusement Park, ( the roller coaster center of the universe) and I decided a few years ago, after riding the Millenium roller coaster, that amusement park rides have now exceeded the human body's capacity for withstanding those kinds of pressures. Sticking with the milder rides from here on in. Chicken shit, I am.

Just another reason not to ride the rides at the County Fair this year! But it's all good for me at least, all the damn spinning rides make me sicker than shit.

Heard about this today. Pretty scary stuff. We've got a little carnival coming up here in Reno next month during the big rodeo. Remind me not to ride anything.

    **Update**

23 confirmed injuries, 3 were mediflighted to Modesto, or Sacremento.

Good news though, all of those injured are now at home.

My son goes to school with a couple of the injured and a couple others go to the area middle school.

I never....EVER ride on temporary carnival rides. I only go on those that are part of a permanent facility, like Six Flags.

Those mobile rides look like they will fall apart at any time, and no one working them has even graduated from high school.

No carnival rides for me either. Not only do they not look safe, but to even think about getting on one makes me nauseous.

I had a bad experience with the "Octopus" when I was about 12. I haven't been able to ride one of those things since.

Chef is right about the carnies as well. A nasty bunch of people to say the least.

Well, not Six Flags for me, but Disney or Universal.

You just look at the roller coasters at these fairs and how the base literally moves as the cars move by and its any wonder that anyone gets on these things.

I don't know if you could look at "Joe Dirt" as an expose of the carnival industry, but in my experience, it's not too far fetched. I would never put anyone I loved on one of those cut rate thrill rides. Maybe someone I didn't love, but that's a whole different story there.

If I had to list the top ten dumbest things I have ever done, willingly getting on the rides during "Midnight Madness" at the county fair certainly would be on the list. Of course, there were certain 'influences' that may have helped me along.

I remember the very 'Super Loop' that I had ridden basically ate itself he next week at a different venue. I just kept thinking, that could have been me!
