Default A hundred billion in cash; Not a nickel in taxes

NEW YORK (CNN) -- There is an industry in this country that is making billions in profit while average Americans are struggling to fill up their gas tanks.

It's an industry that made an average profit of nearly 17 percent in 2007 while most Americans could barely keep up with inflation.

It's an industry whose members paid a grand total of zero dollars in tax on their endowments last year.

Are you outraged? Are you ready to call on Congress to investigate or demand that a "windfall" tax be placed on these egregious profits?

Well put down the phone because the industry I'm talking about is Higher Education. And make no mistake, it is an industry.

"You'd be taxing success here," Kevin Casey, Harvard's associate vice president for government, community and public affairs complained in a quote that will soon be framed and hung in my office. "Over time, this would put us at a real competitive disadvantage, which would drastically hurt the Commonwealth."

Harvard is suddenly laissez faire! Love it.

I love how so many of the people who are posting comments on the cnn page completely miss the point of the article. They say that all this Harvard money is used for research and that thaking it away from them would hurt the general good. That's true, and that's really the point he is making. He's pointing out that if you take all of a successful organizations resources because you think they have too much and redistribute them to make everyone average, then they're will be no one left with the nessasary resources to come up with new ideas and procducts and we'll all just be average forever. He's just pointing out the double standard, not saying that Harvard should have their money taken away.

Higher education is a huge industry which hides behind the tax laws just as organized religion does. But its political taboo to change it. My beef is and always has been that a BS or BA degree should be had in 2 yrs not 4. Just look at all the money the schools and states make keeping you for four years taking mindless classes that have nothing to do with your major. No wonder Bill Gates dropped out.

Add Harvard to the "Do as I say, not as I do!" club. They've been pumping socialists out of there for years, and we all know that the socialists love taxing success. Can you say, "Double Standard"?

Yeah it is. The campus I was on was better maintained than the city it was in lol. Look at the "rising costs" of college, and for a lot of people it is really difficult to pay for an education. I was on the "Student Senate" at my university and OUR budget was close to a million dollars; and that I'm sure is small compared to a lot of larger schools. We'd have nice perks like dinner with the governor with beef tenderloin, jumbo shrimp cocktails, and an open (and free) bar. Seemed a little extravagant to me One time at meeting with the board of trustees I asked an administrator what her job "entailed", and she basically told me "figuring out how to keep kids in school longer"...she then laughed like it was a joke lol.

In part I do agree that some classes are basically wastes. By-and-large though, if you apply yourself and try to get the most out of your classes (the ones not pertaining to your degree), you will come out a "better rounded individual". Just my 2 cents...
