Two. A main guitar and a backup that sits on a stand behind the amp(s). They're both hooked up to an A/B box.
I've played some "really big" gigs where I've taken a backup for the backup, but that's just me being nervous and covering all the bases. I've never had to use it. (I bring a backup amp in those situations too.)

It's been a while since I've had a song in the setlist that's in "drop D" or anything like that. If I do have a "drop D" song, I tune the backup guitar to it. If I break a string and need the backup, I can make do with the lowered string until I have a chance to retune it.

    Don't read this.

    i usually take 3
    a modded strat
my old kramer which is getting tempremental now
and a gibson MIII (a what now!?) to be honest its about the most versatile guitar ive ever played and no matter what abuse i give it, it never goes out of tune.
    then i plug into my 5150 and a jcm800
normaly i carry a bag full of spare leads, picks, strings, straps, gaffer tape and batteries...the usual!

2, I bring either my EVH Ernie ball or a Wolfgang and my SRV strat. 5150 combo is plenty of sound for me for club gigs.

For big rock band gigs: three. My "main" guitar that's standard tuned with a D-Tuna (always a Wolfgang); a standard tuned backup that also gets played for a few songs (sometimes a Wolfgang, sometimes one of my custom axes); and one tuned to drop-C# for the heavier songs (always a Wolfgang).

For smaller jazz or church gigs I bring one guitar and the smallest amp possible. One trip from the car to the gig!

Man - Did someone mention a Gibson MkIII? I love those things...years ago I had a choice of one of those or an Ibanez and like a fool I picked the Ibanez.....damn. They crop up occasionally on Ebay but they are so rare. killer looks and awesome to play if you've the top of the line one.....

Anyway, back to the question......I play two / three times a week around the UK in three acts.....I always take two of my Musicman guitars and for the Bon Jovi tribute - I use a Kramer Jersey Star (which for a relatively cheap guitar has a great live sound, the stock pups seem really good).

It's weird. After one of our BJ tributes, the singer gets all the women coming to him and I get all the blokes talking about guitars. They have a weird look on their face when they ask 'You must really love Bon Jovi to have copied the shows like that?' My standard (and true) answer is 'Well we try to put on a good show - but I really don't like Bon jovi at all. I prefer Van Halen, Dream Theater, Paul Gilbert........'' You can almost see the panic setting in as they usually know nothing of these guys!
Ed: Actually, the last record I bought was by a band called Brand X
Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?
Dave: Look at that ankle - dirty girl!

I take my the 80's charvel I striped and an epiphone les paul. No back up amps because I don't have one. The 5150 seems pretty durable. I like the les paul as a back up because it doesn't have a floyd so there is no trouble tuning on the spot, and it's an epiphone so it is cheap and I don't have to worry about it. I also bring an alan wrench, a truss rod tool, a tuner and some strings.

I take my two main guitars... one's tuned to drop D (ebmm) and the other is is drop C# (wolfgang). If I ever do any songs in standard E I'll bring my Fender strat... but all the songs we play that I wrote are dropped tuning... so I'm stuck playing those 2... really sucks.. lol.

    I take 3.

I switch between two, my '84 Kramer Pacer and my Warmoth 1-hum EVH-type Strat during shows depending on the song.

I bring either my Wolfgang or one of my other Kramers as the third guitar, but I've never had to go 3 guitars deep.

I bring 3 guitars. 2 with a whammy and one with a stop tail piece.
Usually my custom 83 Warmoth, PRS CE 22 and Les Paul Standard.
As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.

This is what I used when I was in the band, gigging regularly:

And this is what I would be using now if I were to get into another band:

The Butterscotch strat has been replaced with this guitar since the picture was taken:

The Kramer would be my main axe. The bridge pickup is a Custom Custom. The Fender would be for single coil stuff, and the acoustic for, well, acoustic stuff.

that was me, you're right they are killer players infact its the only gibson i'd ever possibly consider buying again. i bought mine brand new christmas 93
since owning it ive had to iron out some issues...i replaced all the pots and switches as the gibson one went crakly withi a couple of months and after about a year it needed a refret so i dug deep and went for a full stainless steel refret. ever since the thing has been solid as a rock.

which bon jovi band do you play with?, i may have seen you if you get round the leicestershire way (the vic bikers pub in coalville ring any bells?)

Hi mate - Sounds like the standard Gibson crap that you had to sort! I'm always searching for these...gotta get me one in the end!

My mates band (Rockstar) play that place a fair bit. Thinking about it, we haven't been to Leicester for a while - I think we played at The Swallow in Thurnby(?) last which is a small place but has got a good atmosphere and full of vnice women;O)....the landlord used to be the bass player in a famous 60's band (can't recall then name) and he's always got some great stories...

The bands I am in are Smooth Inc, Big Jovi and A Flock of 80's (which is an 80's tribute of all the classic 80's stuff all done in a rock format). Which bands are you in?

Just getting back into the game again after a 10 year hiatus, but 2 or 3 usually. Two homemade jobs always and my '68 Strat on occasion. For amps, My 5150 blockletter, and my '67 Marshall 100w for backup.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.
