Default VH 1 Gold Disc question

Seriously- Anyone have one of these? Is the sound clarity that much better? Is it really worth the $150?

    Roth on...
Imagine a world without Eddie Van Halen.

"From the moment David Lee Roth appeared at the top of a giant runway that snaked through the Oklahoma City Ford Center audience Tuesday night, he wore the one thing that told every Van Halen fan that everything was right with the world. It was a maniacal Cheshire cat smile announcing happiness and enthusiasm that cannot be faked. Not only was the old band back together, it was thriving."

Remastered gold CDs absolutely have higher fidelity and better sound, crisp highs and deep lows. But it depends on the company manufacturing said gold plate discs. MOFI Labs is considered the standard, and unfortunately, VH or Warner did not use them in their construction of VH's only gold CD.

However, I've listened to a copy of the gold VH1...it does sound good. I don't own one. I'm not sure it's worth 150 bones, though. Kick myself for not picking up the VH gold CD at the record shop when it was nineteen bucks.

I picked up a sealed MOFI gold copy of Rush's Signals a while back, and it's pure audio heaven. But I only had to pay fifty bucks. Factory sealed copies of Moving Pictures and 2112 go for over two hundred these days. Some collectors want FIVE hundred for original pressings.

are you guys talkin about the remastered gold discs?
I used to wonder why he was grinning all the time(Michael Ian Black talkin about EVH on VH1 I love the 80's) but then i realized the reason he's grinning is because he's Eddie F*#king Van Halen

Yep, but DCC is held in much higher esteem in audiophile circles than MOFI.

Steve Hoffman's mastering job on this title, as on every other title of his I've heard, is superb. It's much warmer sounding than the Warner remaster. It has much more dynamic range. It's nowhere near as compressed. The bass sounds more natural. The highs also sound more natural. It's just better in every way. He actually did 1984 for DCC, too, but it was never released, as DCC folded before it made it to the market.

Perhaps it's not worth $150, but it's a very nice sounding disc.

I've heard the exact opposite, but it really doesn't matter now, as DCC is defunct and MOFI is still cutting new remasters for various artists.

I'd love to have heard the '84 gold disc.

VH oughta cut 5150 as a gold disc under MOFI, pump up the deep end. That'd be a keeper.

I've got a 24K gold VHI made by DCC. Sounds really good, but looked so cool, I mounted it in a VH display I made, along with some autographed stuff.

I think I paid $25 for it at Virgin Records about 10 years ago.

No, they're not the regular remasters. The Van Halen 1 gold disc is actually plated in 24 karat gold. Supposedly the gold plate makes the sound more smooth and sharp than the standard aluminum CD surface.

It's out of print now, a collectible, thus the high price.

I got one for about $25 when they first came out. It sounds good but the remaster sounds just as good to me. Its a cool item for the collection, but I'd save my money, I wouldn’t pay $150 for it. But... I'll tell you what I'll do just for you, I'll sell you mine for $125

Ditto. Forgot where I got it though.

You are right in remastered discs, even DVD's with THX remastering, are superior with all the nuiances of bass and highs. However, do not forget that it's totally worthless to buy "remastered for superior" anything if you don't have a quality system to play them.

If you buy a $150 cd and play it on a $100 walmart cd player, you just screwed yourself. To fully reap the benefits of enjoying a high dollar quality remaster you need a true audiophile system to play it on. Otherwise you just bought a Ferrari to drive 55.
