    Default iPod question

If my computer gets fried somehow and I loose all the music I have saved on it, can I move music from my iPod back to my computer (or onto a different computor)? We're having a garage sale and I'm trying to decide what CDs to sell. I currently have all of my CDs on the comuptor and on my iPod, but don't want to loose all the music if out computor craps out.

First off, backup all your songs from your iTunes library onto blank CDs. My library is over 1600 songs, and I used 10 CDs for backup (actually 20, as I created 2 backup copies). Cheap insurance.

Yes, you can use another computer for your iPod, but any tunes you ripped from your personal CD collection will NOT transfer to the new computer from your iPod, only purchased songs will transfer. If you use the backup CDs though (as mentioned above), your entire library will be safe.

Not true. If you research it a bit on the net, you will see there are guys who have "cracked" the ipod. You can actually do the following. Share your tunes with someone elses ipod without loosing yours. Transfer the contents of your ipod to any itunes library, etc... The ipod is basically a small hard drive and when treated as such can be used as one. Guys use ipods to do live recordings, etc..... Apple figurs most people won't try to figure it out or even have the where with all to do it.

I paid $20 for a software program off the net that enables you to copy from Ipod to your computers hard drive. I can't remember the name of the software, as I'm not at my home computer right now. I'll post the name of it tonight when I get home. It's well worth $20 just to have the flexibility in case something happens.

For this particular software, there is a trial version, however it's limited to 100 songs, and was fairly limited and more time consuming than it was worth.

    another iPod question:

I like using the iTunes music store, however, by doing so, that means that should I ever buy a portable music player, I'm pretty much locked into an iPod (unless I want to burn all my purchases to CD and then upload them to another player as .mp3 or .wma files), correct?

Friend of mine usually takes his iTunes purchases, burns them to CD and then converts to mp3. PITA, but that's how he does it. I would imagine someone here has a simpler way to convert though.

Perhaps one of the mods could change the title of this thread to "Ipod technical questions" for one stop shopping for this info?

...or even as an "MP3/portable player tech questions" thread, in case folks have questions about their Zune or SanDisk or what other ones are out there.

OK, I've got a question. A lot of times I have my Pod on shuffle, but that also means that two songs that should be together, ie: Eruption/YRGM, get seperated. Is there anything that can be done to 'link' the two songs together when in shuffle mode?
