Default How the heck?!!! Unfinished, but shipped anyway?

    Scored this in a trade.
How does anyone let this end up on their customers doorstep? I'm not going to bash the maker, but I am going to show this. Other than the glaring unfinished locking nut shelf it's a pretty good neck. Feels good except for the fret ends that are a bit sharp, but I deal with that myself if the wood expands and contracts due to humidity. Good straight grain and nice profile.

How do you ship something out like this? The pencil line is where the locking nut ends and on a 5150 neck the shelf should be even shorter than that. This shelf is actually 1/4" past the line.

Took me less than 10 minutes to get set up and fix it.

This is how it should be for a 5150

I'll just say ... I've seen much worse.
A quick bump into a drum sander will remove that overhang with no problem.

IMO, people who purchase replacement necks, bodys, etc., and assemble their own guitars should have some knowledge and/or woodworking skills to be able to 1) spot things like this, and 2) correct things like this.

Building guitars isn't like building a house of Legos where everything fits perfect.

I always recommend a "mock build" to help spot things like that and to allow opportunities to correct them prior to doing any finish work and/or final assembly.

Yeah that's a bit baffling how that could have shipped with no one noticing. It's pretty hard to miss. Kinda like Shaq at the IHOP.

    Must have been FrankenStrat...

I hear his shit blows chunks...

Too bad...if I had received that I wouldnt know the first thing to do with it and would probably end up sending it to Divebomb for a fix.

Some people just dont do good work anymore.

That's something! I thought it was frankenstrats too. I heard good things about his stuff, but recently I saw pics where to show the grain in photos, he wet the wood. That was something I was tought never to do when building guitars. Any excess moisture causes problems down the road.(warping, finish cracks, etc.) Unless of coarse he dried the guitar for another month or two and resanded.

i have a friend who shall remain nameless that ordered a neck from frankenstraat and had it shipped over to the u.k.
when it finaly arrived the fretboard had lifted from the neck, and they refused to fix it or refund him, personaly i would never buy shit from the guy, even if the neck that dive is showing us in the original thread isnt from frankenstraat it still should never have gone out the door to a customer

Nothing personal Kyle ... I just don't agree with builders who post threads that nit-pick and trash the work and reputation of other builders.

A thread showing how to correct such a "problem" would have been much more productive IMO.

I seriously doubt it was Frankenstraat. He does good work from what I've seen and his attention to detail is remarkable. And Dino, I agree that it is in poor taste to pic at other builders. If it was Straat, it had to be a mistake from maybe someone who packed it and shipped unknowingly to Straat.

Could very well be the work of Frankenstraat ... I honestly don't know.
I'm not here to defend his or anyone elses work or reputation.

I too have received bodys and necks that needed a little attention after receiving them. These were all from reputable builders as well as major manufactures and in alot of cases, these bodys and necks resulted in "how to" tutorials on various sites to help folks, not only recognize these "issues", but more importantly ... show them how to correct them.

If you build guitars, you learn to correct problems as you go to help ensure a smooth build. You also learn to recognize what "issues" will have an effect on sound, tone, and functionality and what "issues" are merely cosmetic.

I can assure you the "issues" with this neck are merely cosmetic however, ...
If you've never built a guitar before or don't have much experience with working on your own guitars, then you probably look at threads like this and say "if I had received that I wouldnt know the first thing to do with it and would probably end up sending it to Divebomb for a fix".

I'm not going to insinuate that this was the very intent of this thread, but if something takes 10 minutes to 'fix', why not post something that will actually show people how to do it themselves?

    I'm just say'n.
