    Default Without You

I realized the other day that I didn't have this song on my IPOD I put it on there and gave it a listen for the first time in about 2 or 3 years.

Just wondering what you guys thought of this tune now that's been awhile and the dust has settled on the whole VHIII ordeal.

I'll weigh in later with my thoughts, I'm pretty busy at work right now.

Pretty amazing now that they spent $1 million on the video, and didn't they go to Finland or somewhere up there to make it?

I just started listening to it....I like the drums in the begining, the guitar starts off sounding pretty cool but once everything kicks in it sounds really "messy" like there's too much going on. I think this is one of the probllems with Ed playing bass-I'm pretty sure he did on this tune....Mike might have played simple parts but they fit the song, here it's like "what the hell is going on"?

Gary really does seem to be straining to sound like Sammy here which is too bad cause I liked his voice on alot of extreme stuff.

    more later...

Amazing song. To me everything sounds great. Rather than 'messy' I prefer to consider it layered, there is lots going on and, I swear, after listening to it thousands of times I am still little bits I have never noticed before.

Love near the end when it goes quiet with the strumming and backings....its just a real nice tune. Solo has to be one of Eddies finest pieces of work too....

Oh and its Van Halens best music video without ANY doubt.

    video:

I like the song, but agree that Garys vocals were forced...as they were on the whole album. Could have been much better vocally, but the music is pretty decent.

I like the solo section, all of it is cool.

I also kinda dig the part where it gets slow the whole "the point I'm trying to make..." is cool

the jam at the outro is good but overall I don't know if I'll ever really "like" this whole song. Like I said there's too much going on at times, I just don't think that adds anything to the song. The mix is bad IMO but that's been beat to death on this site.

overall I'd say it's not bad....it's just not really good either if that makes any sense.

I know when the Without You video came out, it initially received a lot of airplay on MTV. Isn't it the first rock song to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts?

The footage of the band was actually shot in L.A. Everything else was shot at the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

I like the song a lot, but there are several things I have to ignore when taking it in. I like Eddie's tone and part, and I like the big build-up pre-chorus in typical VH style. Alex is pushing the click track kind of hard and seems to pull back in places. The bass part--like most of what Eddie has played on recent VH stuff--is busy, lacks a big low-mid punch, and parallels the guitar too much; say what you will about Mike Anthony's simplicity, but the man always found a spot between Ed and Al and played the shit out of his part. I was very accepting of Gary in those days because I wanted VH to keep moving forward. I have a VERY difficult time taking in his vocals now, though. He strains, his phrasing is just weird and not very groovy, and some of his lyrics get kind of stupid (like "One I Want"--great song, dumb Alanis Morissette-style trying-to-be deep lyrics). Still, when I pick up a guitar now one of my most favorite warm-up songs to play is "Without You."

OH YES YES YES!! I LOVE IT!! When Al hits those freakin drums, then Ed hits that first lick! BAM!! It puts me in the best mood, and I'm good to go for the rest of the day!! OMG!! Nothing better than that feeling!!

I watch the video at least four times a week. I love Ed's hat, and the way he jumps around at the end. I love the part where Al's sitting in the chair too.

I always liked the song; it probably could have fitted on most of the other albums (unlike the rest of VHIII). I agree that Cherone's voice is annoying and I don't particularly care for the background vocals (i.e., they don't sound like Mikey's involved IMO), but overall I think it's a cool song, by far my favorite from that particular album.

The song is below average at best but still shits on Once.
