Default New list of recent bankrupt companies...

    or so I've read...

The following companies just filed for Bankruptcy:
    Hollywood Video
    Sharper Image
    Performance Team Freight
    Linens n Things
    Circuit City

If you have gift cards from the above list use them ASAP, they will not
    be valid for much longer.

Circuit City has been bleeding for years. They tried, unsuccessfully, to go toe-to-toe with Best Buy on appliances and really got burned. I'm sure the little CarMax fiasco didn't help either.

So then I guess they'll be having a nice little sale real soon then. They've got some good stuff over there.

Circuit City just opened a brand new store in my town a month or two ago. Wow, that sure happened fast. I wonder if they will file for protection rather than a full fledged bankruptcy?

    How about K-Mart buying Sears?

Speaking of which, has anyone seen the newer K-Mart commercials that feature a little animated 'Blue Light?' Christ, if there is any reference to their past that they would want to shed, it would be that (as I hear Carson jokes in the background of my brain). Hell, walk through a K-Mart store back in the day and hear the announcement for "Men's bottomless underwear, 5 for a dollar," and find somewhere to hide while the local geriatric would hoard in packs to the flashing blue light.

As for the Sears thing, at least they have some valuable name brands such as Craftsman and Kenmore, which have serious name brand power in some markets. Just thank God they got rid of the Toughskins line of clothing. I swear you could put acid on those things and they wouldn't bend.

Hollywood Video and Blockbuster are getting crushed by Netflix and other similar companies.

I would never pay $5 to rent a movie from Blockbuster. It's been a long time since I have even been in one. I can just go to Best Buy and buy it for $15 - $20. Watch it a couple times and you break even.

Circuit City's biggest fuck up was their idiot CEO thought that he could save a ton of money by laying off all the experienced workers (you know, the ones that actually know the products) and hire new folks at entry level rates. You know, the kids that sit there with a stupid look on their face when you are trying to decide between models of a product. I'd guess quite a bit of folks looking to buy electronics or whatever technology are not exactly sure what they want, they need someone to walk them through the different choices. I had a terrific experience at Circuit City buying a computer - the guy wasn't on commission, so he sold me the one he thought was best vs. the most expensive. That's how you get repeat business, but I guess the CEO slept through that part of his MBA program.

I heard recently that Sears is set to begin marketing their house-brand stuff in other retail outlets. Perhaps Craftsman will be available at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Toughskins....I grew up in those things, as well as Roebucks. Didn't have a "cool" pair of jeans until I was probably 13 and it had become a real social issue at school. And even then, it was a pair of Lee's, which was only semi-cool. Ah, teen angst.

That obviously wasn't the dude that tried to sell me seperate rear & center channel speakers for $400+ when there was a combo with the exact same center w/ TWO sets of the exact same rears for $250 sitting right there on the shelf beside him. He finished his little pitch on why that center was so great & the rears matched it so well, blah, blah, blah & when he's done I ask him what's the differnce in that vs the boxed combo. To which he replies "nothing, but you get 2 more speakeers with the combo & it's $250..." at which point he pauses & asks if he can can help w/anything else or if the combo is all I need.
