    Default Gibsons--nickel vs gold hardware

?-does the gold turn green? does the nickel turn brown? which one holds up longer? which one keeps its value longer?

I have a 2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio in alpine white with gold hardware. I think the gold hardware really looks good on it. No green that I can see.

i have no idea which one holds its value longest but i can from experience say the following:
i'm the rather proud owner of a mid 90's gibson mIII (yes someone actually bought one!) its a great deep metallic blue colour with a gold floyd (original) and gold tuners etc...well they were all gold now they're just silver with a bit of gold on and they have been since about 8 months after i bought it...honestly the gold hardware is crap, maybe its just this model or maybe just this guitar or my sweat is acid or something but it wore off real easy, but i will say its a GREAT guitar its about the most playable gibson ever...and i HATE gibsons with a passion

I have a LP Studio Plus with gold hardware. On my bridge, the plating has worn off due to my caustic sweaty palms. I do sweat more than the majority of people and had something similar happen to me with a silver trumpet in high school. I must say those are the only items that this has happened to. Nickel plated items have stayed the same.

thanks guys! looks like nickel is the way to go.

Here's another question if anyone can answer.

I've got my eyes on ES 335 satin finish ---it's right in my price range. HOWEVER I'm not a fan of the dot inlays---->isn't it against the law to have a Gibson without the big blocks?

My question is, if I was to get that 335 at some point down the road is there a way to get those dot inlays changed to blocks and if so how much would that probably run me?

No it's not.... Buy the gold hardware and enjoy it until your sweat turns it silver! I'm kidding.. I have an LP with gold harware and it looks the same as it did when i bought it six years ago. The key is to put the Godamn thing back in it's case when you are not playing it. Also, cleaning the hardware every now and then never hurts. Don't leave it stting on a guitar stand when not in use. There is alot to be said for storing instuments in their case.
