    Default "Personal" file transfers

My wife's job requires her to be constantly traveling, but she still enjoys her favourite soap opera, so I bought a DVD recorder last year so I can record them on DVD-RWs and then she either picks 'em up when she comes home, or I mail them to her. She recently got an iPhone, and she's not averse to watching videos on it. I can convert the shows on the DVD-RW to a file on my harddrive that can be imported into iTunes, but the big question is - how do I get it to her? I did a test on one today and the one hour episode was 355 MB - too big to attach to an email, and I don't have a big enough web space to upload it to (plus it would take a while to upload it, and then she'd have to spend probably an equal amount of time to download it). Is there a way that she could download it directly off my computer without me opening myself up to everyone else out there? I suppose we could use AIM but I don't always have that running and I believe I'd have to initiate the transfer. What I'd like is to be able to put it in a folder and then somehow she can access that whereever she is and download it. Would something like that bit torrent program I used once to download a DVD boot work? How do I make it so that she would be the only one that could use it?

Can't you just give her the password to your iTunes account?

You could look into a freeware ftp server program - basically you could use that to assign a folder on your hdd as a ftp folder, and password protect it. From there you pretty much just leave your pc on and she would use a standard ftp client to be able to fetch 'em out of there. I cant remember the name of the software I used to use for this, I'll have a look when I get home from work. It was pretty easy to set up and freeware. I'll link up some softare for converting to ipod/iphone vids too, might be able to compress them a bit better.

No point going bitorrent - the advantage of bittorent lies in multiple people hosting the file, as this is just a one to one situation, theres no reason to go that path

I don't think so as that would only allow her to purchase from the iTunes store, not copy files that I've imported into iTunes.

As far as the FTP thing, how would she be able to find my computer from wherever she was through the house router?

OK home now. Still cant remember what I used to use but anyway, just google up 'freeware ftp server' and 'freeware ftp client' and find ones that are easy to use

    so - ftp primer

    http://www.ftpplanet.com/ftpresources/pc_ftpserver.htm

You'll be acting as a server, so you would run something like this on your pc:

    http://www.tucows.com/preview/371817

and she would just have any ftp client - such as

    http://www.smartftp.com/

You can actually also do this side of things via 'network places' in windows, but anyhoo

So having done that, in theory all she would need is your pcs IP number, and a password, and probably a port number (which you will probably need to open up through any firewalls) and she should be able to log into that folder, see the contents and d/l them whenever she wants. Once your set up all you need to do is throw the files in there and leave your pc on

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Oh yeh. have a fiddle with http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ and see if you can get those files down a bit smaller.

The only downside to the ftp server approach is it is going to take some time to download the file to her computer then upload it to her IPOD. (I'm IPOD stupid but I don't think you can FTP with one) A 350 meg file you're probably looking at, at least 45 min to an hour to download on a good broadband connection.

My wife uses GoToMyPC to do this from home to her work PC. It'll cost you a little, but it's free to try. You load their software on your machine, then your wife can securely log onto that machine from any other computer. Not sure about the i-phone platform, but I think if it has a web browser it should be able to access it.

Or, if you want to stop covering up the real reason...you can post those nekkid pics of you for your wife over at imageshack!

I'm writing this on an iPhone. You're not likely to find a clean solution. Goo is on track. You'll have to look onto exposing your PC to the Internet.

My suggestion would be to find some inexpensive web space. Set up a drop box where any file you stick in the folder on your computer gets dumped to the web space automatically then she downloads it from there.

One of the Slingbox products might be worth looking into.

Or you just tell her to get used to being a couple of weeks behind...
