    Earthquake in Midwest!

It's not everyday I can say that an earthquake woke me up so it's kind of neat to be like all the linkers who live in California. Except for my pale white complexion and the fact that I don't swim well even though I grew up in a river town, I feel a sense of brotherhood.

5.2 magnitude at 4:37 am. I thought my dogs were messing around since they had previously woken me up a couple hours earlier so I didn't think anything of it. I should have realized two 40 lb. dogs don't make that much noise or shake the house.

Yea, I felt it. I work 3rd shift but it was my night off and I was wide awake at home when it happened. You know how your brain sometimes doesn't register something right away? At first I thought it was somebody pounding on the front door or someone driving by with their stereo bass set to wake the dead. Then when my cats sat upright and stared at me like I was doing it to disturb one of their many naps, I realized it was an earthquake.

Hey---I'm in central Illinois, not California! Pretty freaky.

I grew up right on the border of Iowa and Illinois. I remember some of the older cat's saying it could happen there. I also remember thinking....ok...wtf ever.

    um...i guess they where right.

I'm in Iowa right on the border of Missouri and Illinois and I saw this on the news. It didn't make it this far over. I have to imagine that it is quite unusual but fascinating at the same time.

They say it was felt in Chicago, but I didn't feel it. Guess I am too far North.

Being the resident "Pet Californian" in my office in Hebron, KY, several of my colleagues came up to me asking if I felt the earthquake and how it compared to ones I experienced in California. I slept right through it so it couldn't have been that strong where we were. And anything I've experienced pales to 1989 (Loma Prieta).

The scary thing about this Midwest fault system is that it is so different from what we know about in the Pacific Rim. There was a show on the Discovery or NG channel that said that the nature of the fault system by St. Louis is such to where it has the potential to create an earthquake that would exceed the 1906 SF earthquake. That, in and of itself, is scary. However, whereas California has invested tons of time and money into applying the latest technology into architecture to reduce earthquake damage, the Midwest (as far as I can see) has not. But then again, even the most confident of engineers will say that anything >8.0 = "kiss your ass goodbye" time regardless of what building you're in.

Yeah but it's cute that they're all amazed by it.

It's kinda disturbing that they're getting quakes back there tho.

Global warming is a bitch! The beginning of the year we had a snowstorm and it was bright and sunny out during the whole storm. I've never had a snowstorm with bright sunlight involved.

The weather's been pretty weird, that's for sure. We just had snow on Tuesday and now it's like springtime again. Hot, cold, make up your mind already! I have a feeling that summer's gonna be a scorcher and I'm not looking forward to it. All those a/c's will definitely impact our power supply.

I'm waiting on Axx to throw his knowledge into this thread!! Should be a good read!!!

Whatta ya say Axx? Fault lines in the midwest/Mississippi Valley getting ready to shake things up a little. I know they are WAY overdue for the "Big One" which I hope to God doesn't happend in our life time.

An aftershock just happened. My building was shaking pretty good. Nothing falling off shelves or anything...

Only a 4.0 magnitude aftershock (third of the day) but some power outages reported.

I awoke to it this AM. The whole house was shaking. I kinda' wish I was awake enough to feel it

My dog was acting really strange last night when I got home, now I know why.

OK, I just felt an aftershock.

Ok you "Californians" we arent used to this, so feel free to abuse accordingly.
