Default Oh Foshizzle! Giant Volcano Discovered In Iceland

    http://www.icelandreview.com/iceland..._0_a_id=303884

Okay, this is a big dealio in the Geology and Marine Geology world because this kind of volcano shouldn't be able to form on a mid-ocean ridge because the ocean floor is always moving apart. Yet thar she be.

A bunch of guys and gals who wear flannel are going to be buzzing about this for a few weeks and someone's going to have to add a chapter to my Marine Science book.

I'm no Marine Geologist but wouldn't an eruption from a volcano of this size cause major earthquakes and possible tsunamis?

    that's nothing.

all of yellowstone national park is a volcano about 55km diameter plus or minus a significant fraction.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera

basically its a supervolcano, the type that can wipe out 90% of species on the planet.

the cool thing is its way overdue for an explosion and the caldera is rising at a yearly rate perhaps indicating something significant, perhaps not.

basically the thought is when this puppy blows all of north america is covered in ash and the rest of the world sees a nuclear winter.

that iceland volcano is a pimple.

Depends on the type of eruption and size of the earthquake. There was a 7.5 earthquke a couple of hundred miles of Wellington New Zealand last Friday night and there was no tsunami.

    Speaking of waves:

If the fact that this is an aircraft carrier isn't enough, compare the size of the wave to the helicopter on the deck.

Very cool find, Axx. Hope these birds were sealed up tight. That freakin salt water must be hell on a aircraft engine, among other things.

Hey Axx, out of alot of Volcano's that dot the earth, which one do you like to pay attention to? The one I believe to be the next big thing is Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait. I know Krakatoa had a monster eruption many many years ago that was felt all over the world. I've heard that Krakatoa is still very unstable and rocks and rolls with small steam/ash output with moderate earthquakes. Cleveland, up toward Alaska, has had increased activity over the past year or so.

I love big waves. It's such a visual representation of the ocean's mass. Even surfer waves are amazing to me.

That said, how come the helicopter didn't get dragged into the ocean? I didn't see a huge chain or anything.

I spent about 19 monhts on that southwest part of Iceland. Go ahead and blow it up!!!

Seriously Iceland is one hell of a place. The women there are either drop dead gorgeous or look like men. Expensive as hell too.

Karkatoa is a powerful volcanoe and because of where she sits she can kill over 10 million people with a basic eruption.

The one that I worry about is Mt Rainier in Washington. If it goes it will take Seattle, Tacoma and all of those little towns between it and the sound.

The other one to watch is Mt Popo in Mexico, while it's not a spectacular volcanoe there are millions of mostly poor people who live within it's death-shadow.
