    Default Another One

I know...I know...how many countless threads have been opened for a topic like this. but most of them haven't been read in a long time.

So Mods feel free to close of you feel this is unnecessary.

So I started painting my body for my Frankie yesterday. Started with the black. Did a couple of coats. And it looks like this. I still thinks it needs more coats of black. But do our experts think I should sand the body down a bit then put on another coat. I'm thinking this because the wood grain is still very visible.

Again...these are questions that HAVE been asked before I'm sure. But to search through threads with 25 pages would really hurt me

did you use a sanding sealer or primer coat?
from the look of it the wood appears to have "eaten" the paint a little, this often happens when painting untreated wood without some kind of primer.
on a personal note i'd keep it like that, i love to see graining through the wood but if you want a smooth finish you're gonna need to sand it back, seal it then use a primer(which will need sanding with very fine wet/dry paper..wet ofcourse)..then re-apply the black.
i'm ofcourse no expert and im sure dino, ron and divebomb will all be better able to give you advice

Thanks Tom. No I didn't use any sealer as I'm doing a relic and Dino recommended I believe NOT to use a sealer. Plus I didn't plan to use one anyways. I don't want a factory finish and plus the Frankie does have a little grain showing on the black...but not as much as I have now.

Duder... protect your breathing system. Seriously...

Give the coats of paint lots of cure time. I think, technically, Krylon requires months of true "drying." If your patience can handle it, let the body sit for at least a week between colors.

Did you do a mock up before you started painting? No big deal. It's just you wanna make sure you guitar rocks without modifacations so you dont risk damaging later.
I always use a sealer. Just cause it keeps the body from "drinking" the paint like Tom said. You'll use less coats of black. The sealer will have no effect on seeing the grain.
On the Franky, you mostly saw the grain through the black. Only a little through the red and white. But it's a preference.
I would sand the whole body down and let some of the black fill the grain. Dont worry, you'll still see plenty. Ash is deep.

Then spray black again. As soon as you think you have the last coat sprayed, hit it again.

Uh oh. I got a feeling this is gonna be a step by step Franky thread.

There are some pretty helpful threads over at eddievanhalen.com on building the Frankie. Lots of picture too. You should check it out.

Good luck with it. I'm hoping to build one later this year.

For what its worth, I just finished a Frankenstein and used Krylon paints. I painted the black on a Saturday, then striped and painted white the next day and the red about a week later. I wet-sanded with 2000 grit sandpaper to knock down the paint ridges and give the paint a worn-in look and used 3M Finesse-It to give some protection. That was about 2 months ago, and it still looks the same..no cracking or deterioration of the paint. To me, the Krylon seems to be more durable than I would have thought. Best of luck on your project.

That is amazing if you had those results. When I did mine, I did all the colors over a couple of days and wet-sanded nicely after about a week. Put the guitar together and sat it on the floor and within ten minutes, there were carpet indentations on the bottom of the guitar. After about a year, there were cracks in the finish of the paint where it had finally cured.

My recommendation if you want to paint a Frankie and make it look good is to not use Krylon. Use the stuff from ReRanch or take it to a body shop and have them spray it like a car.

It sounds like to me some of you used a clear coat. When I make Relic Frankys I dont do any clear. Just strait color. You just have to be patiient and let it fully cure. If I make a Factory Finished guitar, I use a good auto acrillic clear. Im weird like that though. It's one or the other. I went through most of the problems you guys did. But that's how I learned.
There are so many steps that I've learned through the years just from messin up.

    RELIC

    FACTORY FINISH

Awesome Tips guys. I'm going to plan on sanding it down a bit to smooth things out a bit then put on another couple of coats.

It's been cold and wet here (never good in any situation) lately so I don't know how much I will be doing soon.

But I will post pictures just to keep you guys posted.

    Thanks again guys

ALRIGHT!.....I have: striped the black and painted it white and removed the tape...so now I basically have the VH 1 guitar....I've done some relic-ing...again I think that the wood drank more of the paint than I would have liked because I can still see the grain.....however I like the way it's looking....

Now I have done 90% of the taping over the black and white...here's the trouble I'm having........

Take a look at the Frankie's body straight on...you know in the bottom left hand corner you have that funky designed striping.......I have NO IDEA how to cut that out..........I tried using a wide piece of tape but it's not working.....so in closing............HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT DOING THIS?!?!?

Oh... Also.....are there any measures I could take to reduce the amount of grain that shows before I paint it red....I'd like the red to be fairly smooth even though I'm going to relic it?

Honestly I probably didn't prep the body 100% properly...but that'll be for my next project
