    Default Glue Basswood Bodies?

Are most basswood bodies made of one piece or 2 or 3 pieces glued together? I think I read something about basswood warping in one piece types? Is that right, is it better to glue them together if you are making something out of basswood?

Most Basswood bodies are generally 2 pieces and can be more. I do have a couple that are 1 piece ( I know because I made 'em!) and have had zero problems.

Agreed. Basswood is pretty much the same as alder poplar, or ash as far resistance to moisture changes and whatnot. (All tone woods should have a good sanding sealer anyway.) The only thing to worry about with basswood is those damn dings! It's a little softer than the woods mentioned above. Setting my guitar up against my amp, cable ends, and even my wedding ring has dented my basswood guitars at one time or another. But basswood has a great sound. I built my first basswood guitar 25 yrs. ago when people were saying it was only good for wooden bowls, and childrens blocks. Very easy to work with too.

Most I've worked with are two peice. I did have a one peice in my shop once and was surprized after I stipped it that it was one peice. Never saw one before. Im assuming it can be done, but not recomended?
Im thinking its hard to find a nice, clean blank that size.

The Wolfgang bodies were all three-piece so as to prevent any potential warping.

I really love the warmth basswood brings. I wouldn't dare use it for a bass, but for a guitar it really sings in the low mids. I think, since it's a fast growing and cheaper wood, it is overlooked for some premier guitars.

I have a Musikraft single-hum basswood Strat standing by for one of my next projects. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like!

Basswood is a faster growing wood for sure. Not as detrimental to valuable rain forests. Another wood which I have heard is gaining popularity is Rubber wood. Up till now, primarily used on furniture, toys, etc. Much like Basswood was. It is a considerably harder wood. I imagine it would be brighter sounding. It does have a nice grain though.

I've personally never seen a body "warp", but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I would think the whole two and three piece body thing is more a matter of cost effectiveness for the manufacture rather than any sort of "warp prevention".

But what the hell do I know.

this is a 2-piece lefty i made from basswood for a kit. it's really easy to work, but you have to be really careful working it because it is so soft. it's very light though.

It's really good one, but I never prefer Basswood guitar because they are soft and light weight,so they need special care and I am unable to handle them with care.

That's why I haven't made one for myself yet. It would look like Swiss Cheese pretty fast in my hands.

I think one important part of a Basswood 5150 is the oversized sustain block on the Floyd; it's pretty much required. The Wolfgangs have the Maple Cap so they get by, but if you're doing a true 5150 you gotta upgrade the block and use a real Floyd too.

Bring it on SLEEPER5150; I'm ready to carve one up for you.

I ended up finding two 8" wide pieces that I'm going to glue together, the first time(which I'm still working on), I got real lucky and found a 14" wide piece...I didn't know they were so rare...until now.
