    Default Any Porsche owners here??

Thinking about picking up a 80's-90's Porsche...
Any model, more of what's appealing to my eyes...

Anyone with Porsche experience here, anything to avoid like the plague?

My parents have a fairly new Boxster. I have driven it a handfull of times, its a blast to drive. Its not as fast as new 911 but would compare to a older 911. Lots of trunk room and comfortable to drive for long distances. They have only had to have it in the shop once, the bill wasnt that bad.

My step brother purchased a older 928. Shit loads of power!!! It was a awesome car until he had to have it worked on. It was very expensive to repair, parts are getting harder to come by. He sold it because it was breaking down more often.

Funny, I've been looking in to getting a go-kart, aka 914-6. I drove one a few months ago on the back roads and haven't been able to get it out of my head. Pretty fun spin. Just a weekend jaunt kind of thing for fun.

Don't buy a 924 whatever you do. 914's are pretty fun, but driver's of other Porsche models will sometimes look down their noses at you.

Shit, if I took em' on the twisty little road I was on, the only thing they'd see is their own fat nose because they sure as hell wouldn't see me!

I don't know of anything thats going to keep up with one of those outside of an ariel atom on a twisty hair pin road.

I have a 2002 Porsche Boxster S. Bought it 2 years ago now via private advert. If you are after a cheaper Porsche then I would strongly reccommend the Boxster S. Don't get anything less than the Sport version, the lack of power will be noticeable. If you truly want that 'rapid' feel then it has to be the 3.2 litre.

As a side note the Boxster you are looking at in the ebay auction is a 2.5l and is NOT the Sport version as the seller states. I am sure you know this but I had to highlight it as people 'dress up' the 2.5 and 2.7 models to look like 3.2 by buying the red Porsche break calipers, putting on 18" alloys and adding the 'S' logo to the back (sometimes even going as far as changing the exhaust to the twin exhaust of the S model).

Pre 2000 Boxsters (and post 2000 in some cases) have several notable faults which you should be fully aware of before purchasing one.

1.RMS leak, this is the Rear Main Seal which can sometimes leak. If this occurs you can be left with a very expensive job on your hands - Boxster owners know the dreaded tell tale sign of RMS as oil patches on your drive. This is the ultimate fear of all Boxster owners. You will find LOTS about this online.
    2.Dropping electric windows.
3.Leaking convertable roofs and window seals (I have encountered this on my 2002 Boxster and even after lots of work mine still leaks a little)
    4.Coolant tank failure
5.Must add that if your getting an earlier model you more than likely wont be getting PSM (Porsche Stability Management System) with it. This means on a rainy day you will want to be careful on those long turns, a little too much gas and your back end will spin right out on you (its a mid engined car). I remember once this happened to me and my friend sat to the left of me seemed to be in front of me for a scary moment

I am sure there are more but these are the ones that come to mind immediately.

It is important to remember that the Boxster is a Porsche and it is a sports car, regardless of the 'cheap mans 911' label, this is a supercar and is EXPENSIVE to run. A service will cost approx £800 ($1500?) and parts can be VERY expensive. I am currently building up to a new set of tyres and new break calipers....its gonna hurt my wallet!

HOWEVER!!!!! WOW! Its one hell of a car! Seriousley, if you want a REAL driving experience you will not be dissapointed. Every journey is a joy. The driving position is untouchable, the ergonomics of the whole cabin are stunning and it makes driving any other car after the Porsche a real chore. All in all being a Porsche owner is a love hate thing, LOVE the car....hate, or rather learn to accept the fact that highly tuned cars (MIGHT!) demand your time and money. This is the gamble you take.

Top down and Panama on is untouchable tho!

Thanks, I'm leaning heavily towards the Boxter... I like the 928, but was concerned about $$$ repairs...
