Default Your favorite LIVE performances committed to film/video

Often times bands will crank out live versions of songs that whomp ass over the studio versions....offering more power and passion to an already great song.

What bands have BLOWN you away with live performances of their best (or even worst) songs? Provide visual evidence if you can so we can all experience the masters at their best.

    Rush - "Marathon"
For me, this live version from 'A Show Of Hands' video version surpasses the CD version as you can actually hear Alex Lifeson accompany Geddy Lee on the vocals. This fan-made visual cut actually is a slight improvement over the released version. If this song doesnt give you goose-bumps, you died weeks ago.

Van Halen - "Why Can't This Be Love"
Eddie and Mike helping out on lead vocals makes this clip for me.

    Van Halen - "Unchained"
This video is what made me a Halen fan by the time the video was done first time I saw it at the age of 12!

Night Ranger - "Sing Me Away"
I was fully ensconced into Night Ranger and this MTV video just cemented me as fan back in my early teen years.

Genesis - Man On The Corner
This version for some reason just lived and breathed over the studio release. Tony's keyboards just add the 'ooomph' to this version over "Abacab". No light show....no fireworks....just haunting subtlety.

    Yes - "Starship Trooper"
Again - a video glimpse that gave me a greater appreciation of an already great band. Trevor Rabin is a guitar god (ATTN: Kimmie - Check out Trevor's "Charvel-Striped Eddie" pants) .

    Pink Floyd- "Run Like Hell"
Last but not least.....the greatest version of this song ever commited to film. How can you not love the usually reserved David Gilmour pumping his fist in the air and the light show featured in this one?

I don't know how to put up video stuff, but VH doing 5150 on LWAN (or on boots of the whole tour in 1986) to me sounds way better than the album version. Ed's solo in LWAN seems flawless.

The video boot that for me shows the original lineup in their full glory more than any other is "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" from the 1983 South American tour.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Well being a huge VH fan it might be a little surprising but Mad Season Live at the Moore Theater is my favorite. Nothing fancy about the stage, no flashy lights or pyro but great musicians playing some great rock-n-roll.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

The one song that immediately popped into my head was Where The Streets Have No Name from the live in Boston 2001 DVD. I was lucky enough to experience this in person and it still ranks as a top concert moment I've ever had. This version ruined every other version for me because IMO this is the best the song has ever been performed.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

The "Live At Budokan" album in it's entirety outperforms any of the studio work that Cheap Trick had done at that time. Also the live performances of "Heartbreaker" and "Immigrant Song" from "How The West Was Won" simply flatten the studio versions on "Led Zeppelin II & III". They are faster, louder, longer and definitely played with more "Ooomph".

Cheap Trick- I want you to want me (3:43)

    Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker (7:24)

    Immigrant Song - 1972 (4:04)

I've never seen that one. Good stuff!

What's Bono doing out on the ramp? Are you really allowed to walk out on that thing and sing and stuff? I thought you were just supposed to run out on to it, smile and wave, then scamper back to the stage like a scared ferret.
