    Default Stomp Box Inquiry

Never seen one of these before.
Is it worth the hundred? Or should I just get an old school Phase 90?

Now remember, by no means am I a player. Im just lookin for somethin to play around with.

No clue... I'm always kinda iffy about buying a pedal I've never heard before, especially for that kind of money. I would go with something tried and true like a good overdrive if you're looking for that sort of tone. You might try looking on youtube and see if somebody has posted a clip of them playing that pedal, or checking www.harmony-central.com for reviews. With that said, a Phase 90 is always a safe bet

    Ron,

Are you looking for a distortion pedal or a phase pedal. The Toadworks is just a distortion pedal. You mentioned maybe getting a Phase 90 instead, the 90 won't give you any distortion. Don't know exactly what your looking for but I have heard the Toad and in my opinion it's just all right. I wouldn't be willing to drop $100 on one, but that's just my opinion.

Im just lookin for some cool tone to play, but not shell out a bunch a cabbage.
The guy across the street has a box full of effect petals for me to root through. What I should do is list em and get some more input.
But Im definitely snaggin the Phase 90.

Well, if you are going for an EVH type of sound, I would stay away from that Mr. Ed. It sounded nothing like Eddie's brown sound. It wasn't bad sounding, just not very brown. The Phase 90 is a terrific pedal and one of my very favourites. You can get the standard Phase 90 and snip out the R28 resistor to get the classic Phase 90 sound. It took me 20 minutes to do and most of that time was spent staring at the diagram making sure I had the right one-I really didn't know what I was doing and I was able to do it. You could also get the EVH Phase 90, which gives you the modern tone and the classic tone via the EVH switch, but it's a lot more money.

If you know someone who is looking to give one away, take it quick, they really are great. Other than that, I wouldn't look for the brown sound in any pedal because you won't find it. If you are just looking for some pedals to play around with, something like the Hot British tone bone gizmo at tonebone.com. Again, those are rather pricey but I've heard good things about them. I usually go into my guitar store and go to the used section and see what they have cheap. In fact, I rarely buy new gear anymore and I've never had a problem buying used. Used gear hunting can be fun and a lot more affordable for limited income guys like me.

Yeah, me neither. It has an OK overdrive sound... Definitely go for that Phase 90 though, it's a great pedal!

I get a pretty damn good EVH sound with the Boss OS-2 and EVH Phase 90, and the Boss DD-3 running through the effects loop on my Marshall. I have played through some of the Toad pedals and IMO they are shit for the price. In most cases you get what you pay for, but that company is way over priced.

i bought myself an OS-2 last week i love it and i have a DD-3 yet no effects loop so my echo's a pain in the ass since its before all my drive and it gets compressed.

The phase 90 is great. In front of my 5150 ii it sounds like the club days of Van Halen. I could play those licks until I go deaf with that sound.

Cool. So the Phase 90 and then snag a Boss OS-2.
Should be all I need for a while.

What amp are you using Ron? This thread inspired me to play with my phase 90 again. My ears are done for but it was fun!

Have you considered a tube amp? The VOX AC30 is a great practice amp. The Marshall MG series is garbage, I have owned 2 and hated them, and I beleive that is what the mini stack is. A line 6 modeling amp is also cool. To get the Van Halen vibe going it is almost a necessity to have a tube amp, but modeling technology has come so far that it can basically emulate that feel. Such examples are the POD XT series of digital modelers that use your computer's speaker.
