    Default Killing al Qaeda - Michael Yon

    I usually post Michael Yon's stuff in my blog over in the premium section but every once in a while he posts a dispatch that everyone needs to read.

    This is one of them:

    http://67.192.120.151/index.php?opti...ches&Itemid=55

    In 2005, nearby Tal Afar was known as “Al Qaeda city,” as terrorists used it for training and R&R. And though Nineveh Province is now the most dangerous place in Iraq, it’s much quieter than a couple years ago. Still, there is plenty of trouble, especially when your job is to find it, and the summer of 2008 likely will bring the showdown into Mosul, where the media probably will report a small part of it, missing 99 percent of the fighting to disrupt the terrorists and drive stakes through their hearts.

    The job of going nose-to-nose with terrorists is complicated by the increasing use of suicide vests (S-VESTs), which are exploding all over the place these days. Some of the vests are small, actually just belts with a few hand grenades’ worth of explosives. These are Jihadist ejection seats, which are not per se offensive weapons. When all is going wrong, and the terrorist is about to get caught, he can kak off the explosives and eject out of life.

    The larger suicide vests, often loaded with ball bearings, can kill dozens. These vests are often worn by young fighters, typically male -- though more females are starting to explode. The young men come to Iraq to fight like infantry soldiers, only to find themselves terrorized into wearing suicide vests. In 2005, I wrote about a young Libyan who was happy to have been captured by American “Deuce Four” soldiers in Nineveh because Iraqis were mistreating him and trying to force him blow up some Mosul police. Like many foreign fighters, the Libyan was not hardcore. He was so grateful to be captured that he began telling his entire sad story. The best thing about foreign fighters is that, contrary to myth, often they do not want to die, and when they get caught, they blab everything.

    On 14 March 2008, U.S. soldiers were running a biometric registration station at the Iraq-Syria border. An unknown person came into the building wearing a powerful S-VEST studded with ball bearings. When the person detonated, American soldiers PFC Cody Cook and SSG Bennie Lamb were wounded. Interpreter Faysal Kayif Rashoka and three other people were killed. The vest was powerful enough to collapse a substantial portion of the building onto the wounded American soldiers, causing additional injuries. One Iraqi body was so damaged that the remains fit into two computer-printer boxes.
    His dispatches can be long but they are amazing in their detail. His writing is unmatched in journalism today and he conveys much in his posts.

    If you're not reading Michael Yon you don't know what's happening in Iraq, period.

    Someone who speaks of Al-Qaeda in Iraq is flawed from the outset. Al Qaeda is the boogeyman that the US has used and will use increasingly to suppress dissent at home. Most Americans think Pakistan and Syria are the same and it's easy to sell the idea to them.

    Strange, because the soldiers there have been dealing with Al Qaeda for a while.

    Local fighters and maybe ones from across the border as well. But not Al-Qaeda. Does anyone remember that Saddam and Osama were at odds? Terrorists are not all fighting the same cause, that's just how it's portrayed because that's what serves the US interests. And it has been used a good deal by Bush as a tool against the Democrats to get what he wants.

    Remember how Clinton used the Al-Qaeda excuse to bomb a pharmaceutical plant when he was in trouble politically? Mark my words, anytime the US wants to achieve a hidden goal you will be hearing of Al Qaeda.

    Al Qaeda In Iraq (AQI) is not the same as Al Qaeda, which is a branch of the Islamic Brotherhood and has it's roots in Egypt. AQ then moved to Yemen, then the Sudan before setting up training camps in Afghanistan.

    Al Qaeda is run like an independant insurance broker, it connects Islamic terror groups with technical assets (training, funding, weapons and other skills). Before 9/11 these groups went under their own flag but afterwards they started to fly the AQ flag, mostly to look more important(i.e. successful and scarey) than they really are/were.

    Al Qaeda In Iraq has many names:

    Al-Qaida Group of Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers;
    Al-Qaida in Mesopotamia;
    Al-Qaida in the Land of the Two Rivers;
    Al-Qaida of Jihad in Iraq;
    Al-Qaida of Jihad Organization in the Land of The Two Rivers;
    Al-Qaida of the Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers;
    Al-Tawhid;
    Al-Zarqawi Network;
    Jam'at al-Tawhid Wa'al-Jihad;
    Tanzeem Qaidat al Jihad/Bilad al Raafidaini;
    Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn;
    The Monotheism and Jihad Group;
    The Organization Base of Jihad/Country of the Two Rivers;
    The Organization Base of Jihad/Mesopotamia;
    The Organization of al-Jihad's Base in Iraq;
    The Organization of al-Jihad's Base in the Land of the Two Rivers;
    The Organization of al-Jihad's Base of Operations in Iraq;
    The Organization of al-Jihad's Base of Operations in the Land of the Two Rivers;
    The Organization of Jihad's Base in the Country of the Two Rivers

    It's not the bin Laden, 9/11 al Qaeda. However the two have communicated and discussed strategy.

    AQI was the brainchild of regional douche-bag, Abumusab al-Zarqawi , who began his career as a prison enforcer while doing time for child-rape. He teamed up with other scumbag types in Iraq and by late 2004 had claimed allegiance to Al Qaeda.

    The Al Qaeda of bin Laden is not Al Qaeda In Iraq.

    This does not make AQI any less deadly, just the same as gang members wearing Oakland Raiders jerseys don't actually play for the team but can still fuck your shit up. Same difference. AQI has drunk the kool aid of AQ's bullshit world-view and has been tearing up Iraq. They're so bad that AQ's #2 issued an edict urging al Zarqawi to knock it off because his men were brutally murdering civillians left and right undermining the Islamic cause of AQ.

    In short, AQI (because they're murdering dipshits) adopted the Marxist/Maoist model of insurgency instead of going with the smarter (and much harder to defeat) AQ model, which is to set up shop and begin helping the local community with their basic needs (healthcare and economics).

    AQI's brutality is the reason that the "Surge" has worked. It wasn't anything the US did in as much as the Iraqi's had had enough of AQI and turned on them.

    Just because AQI isn't al Qaeda doesn't make them any less deadly.
