Default So I saw a real knobhead today

I gave it a few hours after I came back home, but I still can't quite settle down. Well what it is - I was on my way to pick up my friend from the bus station, when while being almost there I saw a really massive bloke near the pub, being really nasty towards a girl. She looked fucking 15, although it was dark so she might have been abit older - anyway this twat of a guy keeps yelling at her and the pushes towards then wall when I was just passing by (across the street). You should have seen the girl. She had her head down, crying and shaking while that dipshit kept screaming and being physical towards her. I wanted to confront the guy but my friend had called me just about a minute before then so she was already waiting for me. Besides I wouldn't afford to pay a dentist if I did anyway.

So I called the cops and I was lucky they had a squad right at the station so they came around while the scene was still being carried on. I couldn't wait and see what would happen because my friend now called me so I had to go to her.

Now I regret this, because I can't stop thinking about that girl and if she's alright now. I wonder if I'll call the police dept tomorrow if they'd be able to trace this case down or if it would be just a waste of time.

    Goddamnit.

It's likely the cops handled it. You shouldn't worry too much about it.

Also likely is that the cops won't tell you anything. They wont know who you are nor would they believe you have any bearing on the case unless they absolutely need a statement (if she presses charges).

Then again, thats mostly a reference to US law enforcement. Couldn't even begin to guess how Wales cops operate. Do they even carry guns?

What a dickhead. I don't blame you for not intervening, though. I don't know about you, but I'm 5'9", so negotiating is my strength

Sounds like she's fine. You did the right thing. The frustrating thing will be if she stays with the guy after this ordeal. I had a similar situation once at work where security caught a guy "throwing" his girlfriend into a trash can, yelling at her. This guy was about 5' 6", but but was a bodybuilder. Security got word to me (I was running the place). I ran down the hallway with the 70 year old security guards behind me. I thought "what the hell is wrong with this picture, shouldn't the guards be IN FRONT of me?"

Anyway, stopped the guy walking down the hall. I "invited him to leave" he went on saying it was a personal matter, and I needed to "step off." I stared him down for 10 seconds or so, repeating calmly "you need to leave". It seemed like a much longer time, because I remember thinking "this is going to REALLY hurt if this MF'er takes a swing." He left.. no blood, no broken bones.

And what happened to the girlfriend? she was not hurt, but was back in his arms within a week.

Haha no, UK cops only carry guns in too high-crime areas (like gang zones in London or Manchester), but I knew one of the cops - he visits the store I work in very ofter coz we have alot of shoplifters. The guy is huge! 7 foot 5 or something, he'd have no problems dealing with that tosser.

I agree with Wickett though. At first I thought it was just some chav "picking up" a girl but it looked more like a couple's scene. I'm sure the cops have handled the situation, I was more worried about something like the girl being scared and just saying something like "no everything's fine, let's go home" thing.

I'm not judging you man, but sometimes stopping a beating, a rape, or even a killing might be worth a few teeth, and sometimes a citizen's the only chance some victim has, the cops can't, and often don't, get there in time. I've intervened on more than one occasion with some ass getting physical with his woman...sometimes it's been associates, sometimes it's been strangers. I've got a thing about that, beating on women. Dickless pieces of shit do that. I've gotten a few clocks for my troubles, and I've given a few, but each time it stopped the shit regardless. Guys don't like being embarassed by being reminded hitting women is for weak-assed fuckstains. And yeah, there's always the danger the guy's gonna mop the floor with you, or even pull a gun, but nobody said living in this world is risk-free. Not that I'm advising anyone to be a hero unnecessarily. One time even the girl told me to mind my own fucking business (classic abuse excuse reaction), and he'd already split her lip open. And I've found that most of the time, guys who are so bad-ass they'll knock around a girl, will back down with their tail between their legs if you express yourself in the manner to which said situation demands (forcefully, no bullshit, no fear), no matter how big or small you are. The possibility of fighting a guy makes 'em consider shit for a moment, which often is enough to get their attention off the girl, and buys time for bouncers, other dudes, or cops to help out.

Really, I'm not condemning you at all, you're young and haven't seen that before, so it's totally okay in how you handled it, I'm just expressing the way I feel and react to the same situations after years of seeing the same. You called the authorities and that was wise. People in New York and many urban areas often watch muggings like reality shows, without bothering to call 911 much less intervene. I suspect I live with a lot more redneck morons than you do in the UK.

I had a similiar situation when I worked the casino floor. I was an inspector and all I did was observe, basically. We approached this guy (security and myself) about him grabbing beverage servers. Billy bad ass then took off his shirt and wanted to fight the 3rd degree black belt-he was a bit drunk. He and his wife walk outside. He has his arm around here. As we stand at the entrance watching him leave, he stops, chokes his wife until she passes out, and then continues walking. Needless to say we dropped him. Granted, this was almost 15 years ago, so we didn't have to worry about lawsuits. We got the police involved and we talk to the woman offering to let her press charges. Her reply, "No, that's okay, I deserved what I got." Unreal. Thankfully the laws have changed.

Frank I agree. If I was alone I would have acted differently - what stopped me was the fact of my friend (a girl) being at the bus station with probably half-a-dozen morons there like that guy. I was watching him and the girl until cops thanked me and rushed into their direction. What pissed me off was that I talked to the bouncer of the pub first - told him what was happening - and he was just like "um, dunno. Call the police". The thing is in the UK though - you harm someone - you go to court. It doesn't matter if it was a self-defence, it doesn't even matter if some breaks into your house and attacks you - if you kill the guy you go to prison. The only way I could have faught that guy would be lethal self-defence - palm in the throat and such. Although that's me now thinking post-factum. If the guy was really hitting the girl or if it was a rape attempt like you said - would have been a different story.

    Knee-jerk reaction sucks though!

Heard that. And yeah, you can get sued here too, and even go to jail for defense of another or self. It's a litigation world we live in for sure.

That bouncer - generally those guys have the experience and the size to support themselves - had no excuse at all not to help out.

It's a little different, as you said, if he 'only' was pushing and shoving her and screaming at her - not that that's excusable, it isn't - that's more like on the cusp, a grayer area. If actual beating begins to occur and nobody else is around to help, you can't really ignore it in good conscience. And yeah, if you had another girl with you and there were similar folk about, that's something to consider as well.

That's BS. What do they expect you to do? Let some guy beat your ass because it is wrong to hit someone?

It's not quite has been said here. Sure, anyone gets hurt and if the police are involved there will be legal process to go through. The same as most countries.

Self defence is an issue though and under English law always has been. There was some debate a year or two ago about this very point. What happens if someone breaks into your house? What if they are armed? What can you do? Everyone was up in arms saying this party or that party is trying to change the law but it was left unchanged.

The law in the UK is that, if you feel that your or your family's lives are in danger, you may do whatever necessary to protect yourself. The idea of justifiable force comes into play here though. For an example, the intruder has a gun. You stick him with a knife and he dies. Chances are you will not go to prison. However, intruder has a knife and you put a bullet in his back as he's running away. Murder and you go down.

It's been in UK law for years. No idea why people keep getting confused but for some reason they do.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

Pretty much the same as it is here (for obvious reasons I guess). Soon as you become the aggressor it starts to get legally problematic.

There was a case here a couple years ago where a security guard shot some guy that had robbed a club. She fired into the window of his car and killed him - at that point of time the robbery was done, he was basically not a threat - he was in the process of getting away, so it was deemed excessive as there wasnt a element of defence in the shooting

Wether thats right or wrong you could debate till you go blue in the face!

As for Mish's specific problem, I wouldnt be too worried about it, sounds like the outcome was alright and in those situations, thats really all you can hope for. Volitile situations like that frequently don't end well.
A little zen....... Headed your way.......
