Default Woman & Children 1st REWIND

Awhile back I did a REWIND for VH ll and Diver Down.
Today, I would like to take a look @ W&C 1st. This album doesn't get the fanfare of VH 1 or 1984, but let's be sure that WC1st is a VH Classic.
Arguably(spelling?) this album has 3 or 4 of the bands hottest tracks

    1) And the Cradle Will Rock - WOW! How the hell did Ed do it? This was the lead track and the world was waiting to see if boy wonder could provide a new miracle... He did, with the help of his trusty Marshall & a old Keyboard/Synth type thing. And that is just the 1st 30 seconds or so.
Dave is progressing as a singer & writer on this album too and is super impressive as well. This album is more aggressive/dark than it's predecessor VH ll & it feels right..... Great lead track w/ memorable hook
    Have you seen Jr's grades?

    2) Everybody Wants Some - Power House Intro w/ Al on Drums & Dave doing his primal screams... EVH riffing in the background and Mike joining in too.
This one BUILDS and then goes thru the roof. This tune is flat out AWESOME!
If you don't like it, you don't like VH. Roth is on fire with his yalps and screams , "that's it, a little more to the right" Great improv in my book
Ed simply rips on this song, nuff said.
Side note : You can hear Mike's bass on this album and Mike is fantastic.
    Mike is GREAT!!

    3) Fools - DLR &EVH do some give & take in the intro and then power chords / EVH trinkets we have all come to love....
Teen Angst @ it's finest... Roth has the coolest lyrics. Very bluesy
Love it !! Oh and Mike's vox are pushing the chorus to a better place.
His background vox are the frosting on the cake.... Unsung hero "Mike"

    4) Romeo Delight - Harmonic riff thingy Ed does... then chugging riff.
"I'm taking Whiskey to the party tonight & I'm looking for somebody to squeeze". Love everything about this tune.... It's so raw and under-produced.
That's one aspect I truly miss about VH... They didn't need Pro-Tools and all that other crap... They had talent that just shined.

    5) Tora Tora - Strange "leftover" type / dark piece, but still very cool.
leads right into Loss of Control.... VH had a knack for making these "leftovers" fit

    6) Loss of Control - this tune strikes me as something that was put together in a short amount of time.... Roth must have had his thinking cap on as this riff (if you listen to it) would not be easy to put lyrics too.
It almost sounds like & instrumental that became a song by accident.
It rocks, but it's not one of the stronger tracks in my humble opinion

    7) Take your Whiskey Home - One of my all time fav's by VH. Ed on acoustic & Roth @ his bluesy best... then they kick in with Al & Mike.
Dave knows how to write w/ Ed better than anyone.... it just works
ala Mick & Keith type friction. Roth is stellar on this track on lyrics alone.
His delivery & vocal are perfect... Very raw, classic VH

    8) Could this be Magic? - Ed on acoustic again w/ Dave chiming along.
The production is so understated it feels like a rehearsal tape
It's a part of the VH magic (no pun intended) that got lost after 1984.
Great hook / melody / chorus w/ EVH playing slide acoustic... Great stuff.
"Sail away with someones daughter, better save the woman & children 1st" .... DLR is known to be a big reader.... his delivery strikes me as someone who has experienced life to the full... but, also a well read intellectual... Just my 2 cents... The dude can right lyrics for sure

    9) In a Simple Rhyme - One of my top 5 VH tunes of all time....
Ed leads with clean guitar, then Al takes it all UP a level.... This album & tune bring me back to being 16 again and quite frankly it's great.
Ed is doing his thing, Mike's bass is in the mix (note to Ed, Mike rocks)
The harmony captures the "VH sound".... Mike is the man on back ups..
He complements Dave's voice so well, it's uncanny.....
Special award to Ted Templeman for letting VH be VH... he captured the heart of the band and deserves praise for doing so.

Love this album! Hope you enjoy my take on this VH Classic.... CV

This is my favorite VH album. It's where they, as a band, gelled together as one and made kickass music.

I even like Loss Of Control too. Many don't for whatever reason.

I've been listening to WACF in the car a lot lately. Eddie's tone is wonderful and you can really hear Mike in the mix. My favourite has to be In A Simple Rhyme if I had to pick just one.

I've had this cd in my car for about three months in case I forgot to bring my iPod. It's awesome. The only negatives, IMO, being Fools, Tora Tora, and Loss of Control.

Good album, slightly better than VHII. The only song I don't like is Everybody Wants Some!! I absolutely can't stand it. Fools and In a Simple Rhyme are my favorites.

Great job breaking down the songs....I think your take is spot on. It is an album that goes largely unnoticed by the masses outside of the VH fan base which is a shame....it's a killer album.

And how many times did you hear "Growth" and wonder what the point of it was?

WACF is freaking awesome...their best DLR record aside from Fair Warning and better than all of the sam records. strange to think there are people out there that don't think this record is awesome.

Ya think? If you mean in terms of radio play, then yeah, it should be in the mix with Panama, ATBL, etc, but it's not. Otherwise, I would say most everyone around here would put it in their Top 10 or even their Top 5.

Between 1980-'83, it was the show opener.

I blame Wolfie for not getting one of the best CVH tunes EVER...onto the set list.

    ......btw, nicely done cav.
