    Default Hard to believe history

    Today in Rock history:

1984 - No. 1 Billboard hit: “Jump,” by Van
Halen. Eddie Van Halen writes the music
for “Jump” two years before band member
David Lee Roth agrees to write the
    lyrics and record it.

I know it's a well known fact that Eddie wrote it long before it was recorded but still.

Since the guitar part at the end of jump is the lead in to top of the world, just wonder what that song would of sound like with Dave on vocals and maybe different lyrics ?????????????????

I always wonder stuff like that. Especially on 5150. I remember hearing that they demoed some of the songs with Dave. How interesting would THAT be? If something like that were on a box set (ha ha- I just said Van Halen and box set in the same sentence-shame on me) I'd fork over the cash.

I would love to hear Dave's take on "Top of the World".

Hell, I think a Dave-fronted "Get Up", "BOBW", and even "Summer Nights" would be pretty farggin cool.

Yes.....I know it would never happen. Just sayin....

In the old interviews Ed said he had "Good Enough" and "Summer Nights" worked up to do with Dave. AND he had the parts for "Dreams" written, but it hadn't yet been arranged (Mick Jones had a major hand in that part of it). What would Dave have done with "Dreams"??

Dave likely would have refused to sing it. Just MHO.

Then again, he wasnt shy about using keys on his own solo records. What do I know?

I've always thought that Dave would have sounded good on 'Summer Nights'. I'm sure he would have put a little twist into the song that only Dave could do.

I remember hearing at the premier of VH3 someone asked Ed a similar question and he responded that he had ''Right Now written in 1983, but just didn't have a singer for it.'' The audience booed him for that remark.

Nice to imagine, but Dave would have written totally different lyrics and had a completely different take on the melodies for sure. apples and oranges of the mind.

I have always thought that Dave knew how to step back and let Ed's guitar break loose and shine through, where as Sam always seemed to sing along with and over Ed's guitar lines. Just my opinion, not trying to play -vs-.

After the success of 1984 with the keys, I think he was more receptive to them which was why he used them in his solo career.
