Default The definate VH anthology - What you think?

    Hows this idea.
I've made up my own VH anthology, title "Vanthology".
    It spans over 3 discs.

    Disc 1.
The Noel Monk Years - The DLR era
    1978 - 1984

    Disc 2.
The Ed Leffler Years - The Sammy years
    1986 - 1993

    Disc 3.
    The Dark Years
    1995 - 2004

I thought it was the best way to span over 3 discs, so I've included "Balance" with everything thats happened since the 96 split. Plus Ed Leffler had passed on and tension was present during "Balance".

    Disc 1.

    14. Why cant this be love?
    15. Finish what ya started

The general flaw with most boxed sets is the idea of pleasing everyone, which in itself is a tall order. Look at some of the various Dylan sets out there, none of which I find worthy. Now this has more to do with what my perception of what makes Dylan interesting, yet the conceit can be held the same for other fan's opinion as well.

In as much this is a fine "starting off" point, of course there is room for revision in my mind, as there most certainly is for others. Yet overall, not a bad job.

Now do not forget to make the box a 12 inch by 12 inch deal, include some unreleased live DVDs from each era, at least three large posters, an "iron-on" patch (preferably one each from both the Roth and Hagar years), a "Frankenstrat" guitar pin, a large window decal, a bumper-sticker and particularly detailed 72 page booklet with song facts, recording info, biography and a second book of photos from all eras.

Retail it out for around forty bucks, and I am so there.

The Definitive Anthology would have to be offered in two separate boxsets, one for the Dave era, and the other for Hagar. Fans of the early music don't want to listen to anything but that, and vice versa probably.

I'd throw in some deeper cuts from the Roth era too.

I have to respectfully disagree. Most fans i know dig both eras. While i will certainly be the first to admit that most of those same fans probably prefer the Dave era of VH. I believe that most of those same fans accepted Sammy from the git go(like me) or grew to accept him. Also, if this is gonna be a true anthology, well then VHIII has to be included. I know a lot of people don't care for it but it is part of Van Halen history

The band has always had a hand in my pocket(wallet) If this were to happen, they would have to offer me something along the lines of what chef posted. Otherwise it's just another Greatest Hits package. And i have zero need for that.

Add "So This Is Love" to disc 1 and "Learning To See" to disc 3 and I'd go for it.

Although that sounds really cool... I already have all of those songs, several times (All the original CD releases, the remastered Dave releases, the 2 Best-of sets, and now the Hagar / Cherone era remasters).

The box set I would prefer would be one with nothing but rare tracks & leftovers. Something like this:

    Disc 1: Dave era B-Sides / Out-takes / Demos / Leftovers / Rare Live performances (1977-1985, 1996, 2001)

    (such as):
-All completed songs / demos that never appeared on an album
-All comleted songs / demos recorded during the 1996 & 2001 sessions
-Any songs performed live that never appeared on an album
    -etc etc etc.

    Disc 2: Sam era B-Sides / Out-takes / Demos / Leftovers / Rare Live performances (1985-1996, 2003-2004)

    (such as):
    -Crossing Over
    -I Want Some Action
-Won't Get Fooled Again (studio performance)
    -Rock and Roll (Live)
-Rockin' in a Free World (Live)
-Any other songs performed live that never appeared on an album
    -etc etc etc.

    Disc 3: Cherone era B-Sides / Out-takes / Demos / Leftovers / Rare Live performances

    (such as):
    -That's Why I Love You
-The famed 2nd album demos that Warner rejected
-Any songs performed live that never appeared on the III album
    -etc etc etc.

Disc 4: The Eddie Van Halen Instrumentals

    -Respect the Wind
    -Rise
    -Catherine (the full Studio Cut)
-(some of the 10 albums worth of material he has at 5150, properly mixed to create an album worth of demos / full tracks)

Basically, I would like to see EVERYTHING that has not been released yet to be in a box-set. NOTHING should be left out. As for the regular albums, do one last definitive remaster of each one and release them simultaneously.

The problem is a lot of the earlier material were forms of songs that became the songs we know today. Ex. demo of "Vodoo Queen" then became "Mean Street", which like most of us here anyway have.

The one thing I would love to hear though would be the 2nd album cuts from the Cherone era ( although I understand some of those have become later songs from the Best of 1 Roth songs and the 3 cuts off volume 2 with Sam)

I would also love to hear the suppossed 7 tracks they did with Roth in 2000.I know it's Dave saying this but he thought those tracks were unbelievable and well before Ed went psyco. That I would pay whatever they were asking for it!

I actually wouldn't care if most of the tracks were demos that eventually became other songs (like Voodoo Queen to Mean Street). In fact, I think it would be fascinating to hear the differences. For example, if Dave recorded lyrics for some of the same songs that eventually ended up on 5150, wouldn't you like to hear his take on some of those riffs?

I feel the same way about the Cherone demos. If the music for the 2nd album demos were eventually reused for the 3 tracks on BOBW's, then by all means please let me hear what Cherone's ideas were on those riffs. Now I am a Sammy guy, I really like that era of Van Halen, but even I have to admit that Gary's take on Up for Breakfast had to have been better than what Sammy did with it.

My point is that instead of releasing a Box Set with stuff we've already bought several times over, give us something new, even if it's all just the old stuff we've never heard.

Not too bad. But I suggest just putting a Van Halen playlist on random in iTunes.
