US Air Force To Retire The F-117.

    Wow, I feel old.

From 1981 to 1988 it operated in secret out of Tonopah, Nevada. It's nice to know that the US can keep a secret for a little while.

The coolest thing is the stuff we're going to learn about what the F-117 did before anybody knew about it.

I should point out that it was one of two planes green-lighted by the Carter Administration, the second plane was the A-10. Both reflected Carter's sensabilities in that both were economic in price with a great return in performance.

It was also the F-117 that was a nail in Carter's political coffin because the effectiveness of the F-117 allowed him to kill the B-1, which Reagan used to paint Carter as weak on defense. To Carter's credit, he kept his mouth shut (unlike LBJ and the SR-71) and it cost him.

Well they say it will be retired, but that's also what they said about the SR-71. Speaking of the US being able to keep a secret, maybe it'll still be used. Maybe the SR-71 still is. But shhhhhhh! No one should know for sure!

As the article says " newer fighter aircraft are now joining the fleet." - Or maybe already have.

If the Military is willing to "retire" the F-117, can you imagine the fighter they're come up with that takes its place?

    Cool.

Wow, i didnt expect the F-117 to be retired this early. Its still on top of its game and its still the best at what it does. The plane is only 20 somethin years old. Take the A-6 and the F-4 for example. Both were heavily used in Vietnam and they werent retired until 1996.

Yeah, but the "F" in F-117 is really a misnomer, as the jet carries no offensive weapons for air-to-air combat. It should have just as well been called the B-117.

ya know, i could never understand why they put an F designation on it. I agree they should have gave it a B designation but could you imagine what an actual F-117 fighter would look like or could do

Well I guess as the world's first stealth fighter it was an experimental model to begin with. With digitally powered Raptor in the fleet it must be really archaic..

I am still surprised. I mean Nighthawk, man. I used to play "new" video games with F117 as a lead fighter

It's old, slow, difficult to fly, and the Serbs figured out a way to shoot one down in the 90s...

And I think the F-35 is earmarked as the direct replacement, once they figure out how to keep 'em flying...

    The F-111 wasn't a fighter either.

I think it's numerical designation was chosen to help with it's secrecy, before it was revealed the "Black Projects" gang thought it was called the F-19.

The SR-71 is still used by NASA down at Edwards ( or it was). It was originally designated RS-71 but when LBJ announced it's existense he transposed the letters and called it the SR instead of RS and the Air Force didn't have the balls to correct the President.

The U-2 got it's nickname after a near accident during a taxi-test at Groom Lake. The plane suddenly leaped into the air (because of the amazing lift of it's wings even at low speed) and then slammed back into the runway. Skunk Works head, Kelly Johnson, had a fit and stormed out to the plane and started yelling at the test pilot. Words were exchanged with the pilot yelling "Fuck You!" and Johnson retorted "Yeah? Fuck you too!"...The ground crew thought the little show was hillarious and quickly the new plane became known as the 'You Too....U-2.

I'm sure all this is more than you needed to know.

Not in US service, but didn't the Aussies use it as a long range patrol fighter-bomber?

F-111 started off as a fighter but was converted to a fighter-bomber, hence the more familiar FB-111 (swept wing).
