Default Screw tapping, EVH's trem picking

God, I am trying to do the wrist twitch fan picking and it is such a pain in the ass. I can get a decent roll going but it is so hard to keep going. How in the hell did he even think of this?

i'm sure i've seen in interviews ed kinda borrowed his trem picking style from playing the violin!!(but dont quote this as gospel)...i agree it is a pain to pull off like ed does but all i can suggest is to find your own way of doing it, thats comfortable and easy to maintain....dont just try to copy the man himself.

What's trim picking? Is that was he does in Eruption toward the beginning where he makes the pick look like a hummingbird's wings so to speak?

Thumb and middle finger makes it easier for me, the pick seems to respond to the string differently, I can see why he does it. Not my thing tho I get going too fast and get lost in a brain fart.

The technique has more to do with the angle in which you hold your pick, not necessarily which fingers that you hold it with.

You want to attack the string with the top and bottom EDGE of your pick, not the top and bottom flat sides.
Holding your pic this way prevents drag, increases speed, and will best simulate the "tremolo" picking technique you're talking about.

All of my picks wear away on the edges.
After awhile, they get sharp .... much like a knife blade.

I usually just trem pick normally, but I decided to give it a shot because it looks so cool. It just blows me away that anybody would figure this because it just seems so un natural.

Well figuring that Ed learned how to play guitar with the pick being held by his middle finger and thumbs.....it really isnt that crazy.

For me it is similar to golfing and swinging a baseball bat, I have to fight my natural tendency when I get tense which is to grip it so hard that I create sawdust. Then I wonder why by the end of the day I feel tired and have blisters.

I also find heavy picks work better for me. I visualize it is because on a flexible pick you need to do broader strokes to get the pick through the string because it first wants to flex against the resistance of the string....but who knows if that is what's really happening on a microscopic level.

Quite frankly, I think that it's a waste of time trying to get your tremolo picking to look like Eddie's. His picking hand is a whole different animal than mine, so why should I try to make mine like his? My advice is to just stick with your own tremolo picking style and do whatever works for you.

EVH's speed picking is some of the most unique and bizarre technique I've ever seen though. That's obviously what works for him though I guess.

agreed if a pick is too thin then it will flex and not respond to the next upstroke/downstroke smoothly experimenting with the type of pick you use is invaluable and often overlooked, i went through years of experimenting to find the right picks for me, now i use mainly dean markley .76mm pick as i find (for me) they offer the best combination of flexability AND rigidity.
also Dino has a great point of angling the pick to reduce resistance, it also makes it sound much smoother and has a less "angular" attack...this technique also works well for sweep picking.

I'm sort of OK with it when I do it on the high E string, but when I try go from the E string to the B or G strings, oh! boy, what a mess. It's an incredible technique and like everything cool about the guitar, it looks a hell of a lot easier than it really is.
