    Default Panama a Ballad?!

Okay, I stumbled across an old interview from 1982 with Valerie on PM magazine, and I heard the strangest thing. Eddie was noodling around on his guitar when he was playing a couple chords that sounded strangely familiar, but I couldn't place them until he hit the unmistakable chords from Panama. The chords that were strangely familiar were the first chords from Panama, but picked like a ballad. Sounds to me like he was working on Panama as a ballad back in 1982.

Here's the link, pay attention around 4:04 and tell me what you guys think.

I often use "Panama" as a warm-up song and do a "delicate" finger-picking version of it, beginning to end. The intro and pre-chorus especially make for a nice sounding ballad-type song!

I've heard Ed play that before, it's not "Panama" though.

Sounded like the beginning of Women In Love.

That's what I thought too. Just the chord notes rather than the tapped harmonics.

You guys are confusing the two parts. He does play Women In Love but later in the interview. The part in question is the first time you see Ed playing.

He obviously goes into the 2nd riff of Panama and I do think he leads into it with a picking motion of the real intro. His hands are in the right place and it makes sense to me. But I definitely don't think it was ever meant to be played that way, he's just messing around.

I agree, I think it was something that ended up on "The Wild Life" Sound track. I used to have that on LP, that was a great album BTW.

Yeah, it's not Panama, but could it have been Panama before there was a Panama? You see Panama as we know it wasn't Panama until 1983. Could this be "Panama, a work in progress", or not Panama at all? Was Panama written long before 1982, and he was just screwing around with Panama?

I just wanted to type Panama a bunch of times, but seriously, if it is the same chord positions for the first chords, and the second part is obviously Panama's chords, could it be that since this interview was recorded in 1982, what he was playing there ended up being Panama?

When I first heard it, I though of Women in Love too, but he taps that out with harmonics, so I knew it wasn't that. It still sounded familiar, and when you hit that 4:19 mark the Panama chords are unmistakable.

From 4:19-4:22 or so it's definitely Panama, or at least the riff that he was working on that would become Panama. It sounds like he morphed from Women in Love into the Panama riff. Just think, this might be the very first recorded version of Panama, if only a piece of it. I'm more curious about the tone he's got going on there, very low gain. I wonder if that is his old Marshall head?
