Default An EVH question I don't know the answer to.

So I was watching the 5150 tour backstage rarity thing on Youtube the other day, and I saw Ed was fiddling backstage on a Fender combo. This is the vid where he does the horse and elephant calls.

I know that he warmed up with a Fender Deluxe Reverb (and am assuming that's what it was), but man, the gain sure didn't sound like any DR I've ever heard.

The question is, was this a modded amp? stock? pedals?

    Anyone know?
How open-minded do I have to be before my brains start spilling out?

I know the video you're talking about. Ed used to play a Bandmaster combo, and I believe he said it had the best tone of any amp he played, or something along those lines. I'm not sure if it's the Bandmaster in the video clip; I will have to watch the video again and see!

Just going from memory here, but I thought it was a Twin.
There's a backstage photo in a GW magazine with Ed and that backstage rack. It's a big black thing with a tuner and drawers for strings and tools and stuff. I could have sworn that there's a blackface twin built into it.

    Don't read this.

I thought it was a Fender champion.

I think the "best tone he'd ever gotten" was from a Fender Bassman HEAD.

He said it wasn't consistent or reliable, or something along those lines. I believe the old Bassman design was what Jim Marshall copied when creating his first Plexis, but that may not be accurate.

The amp you're talking about is just a combo.

Well, I think it was Bullwinkle that said it was a BF Twin.

If you watch the video, the amp is on the bottom and there's a silver face Fender on the top.

It does look like a blackface (I thought it was a silver at first). It COULD be one of the Paul Rivera era combos.

I've just never heard an old Fender sound like that (but of course, that may be just Ed).

Anyway, here's the link. It's near the 3:00 mark when he starts messing with it.

My first thought was it was a twin, But I agree I've never heard a twin sound like that. You guys are right about the Bassman though. This is what Jim Marshall used as the template for the Plexi Marshall.

Saddens me to watch this...that I missed out on all that good stuff.

Watching Ed introduce where the band members get dressed (as gay as that is)...he just seemed so happy....so happy. "This is where Micha...MIKEY!... Where Mikey gets dressed"......so sad...

    "Bon of a Sitch!"

But I nearly shit my pants when you see them walking backstage and you see Ed playing guitar behind the curtain and you hear this big wall of sound coming out of the arena speakers.

i agree.... i always thought that regardless of what kind of fender it was, it still had too much gain for a fender! haha
