Default Best small business to start?

I have a few grand to invest, maybe up to five. What is the best small business to invest in....start up?

I've considered Vending Machines....pretty much gave that up. Location is king, and if you own the location, why not buy it yourself?

I like to cook but starting a catering business out of your home seems impossible.

Right now I'm thinking of some type of printing...embroidery maybe.

    Thoughts and advice appreciated.

For the record, I am gainfully employed, just looking to branch out.

Sorry if this has been done already.

To be brutally honest, 5k isnt gonna get you far in a start-up, and sustaining ANY new small biz is tough, even more so now with the economy in the toilet.
I would stash that 5k in a high-yield online savings or a CD and let it just make some money for you.

Don't worry, people just like to joke around.

I agree with ChrisTheEdHead - invest the money in something for now, you would need more to get started with a business. My dad just recently got a building business running and he threw dozens of grand in it - and not even in the States.

Have you considered getting a loan for your real estate? That would get you a very reasonable sum of money to broaden your options.

Look into gettin a buisness plan together. Do the research. You could get a nice loan if your hellbent on startin one up. But my advice to you is, you beter love what you do. Quality of life thing.

if you're only looking at 5k as capitol, maybe landscaping or something. That could get you going on being bonded/licensed and insured. Then as you get contracts or land bids you can go down to the day labor area in your town and pick organize a crew to let use your own equipment and let it grow from there. At least you'd have the write offs on vehicles, expenses, miles etc. That's an important part, and who knows, you might even turn a profit to boot.

Landscaping is good depending on what your demand is though. Around here landscapers are in fierce competition because there are new lots every year. I used to work for a garden center and for a landscaper, it's a tough job but profitable if you do good work. However, with only a few grand at the moment, it's not a wise investment. Equipment costs can bury you in that business.

I know people who are making six figure incomes with internet businesses. And they're working from home only a few hours a day.

Creating and publishing information products is HUGE. Plus, everything is delivered digitally and your business runs 24/7, 365.

I write for people who run online businesses and make a very comfortable living. Plus I have a few of my own products.

There's a lot of how-to products and courses out there on this subject, but if you're looking for some more reputable sources, PM me and I'll get you some links.

I know what you mean. I used to think it was all a scam too. And to be honest, some of it is.

But there are a growing number of people making a killing working at home and running businesses on the net. And not just ebay stuff either.

I was in Orlando a couple weeks back for a seminar and ran into a guy who has a wine blog. He basically posts a short video every week where he samples 2 or 3 wines and gives his opinion. Nothing fancy, just him, a few bottles, and a lot of personality. Then he offers links to his site where you can buy them.

Brother gets 85,000 views a DAY and sells hundreds of cases of wine every month. He's a millionaire many times over, and has even become sort of a cult figure with the college age wine lovers crowd. And all he does is post a 10 minute video every week.

And that's just one example. I know lots of people doing very well selling ebooks, software, information products, affiliate products, etc. So it's happening.

A few thousand won't get the equipment needed for embroidery/printing. I work for a company that does embroidery and printing jobs and we bought 3 used embroidery machines. They cost about 12000€. I know those machines cost a lot less in the states but still, they are very expensive.
