    Default John Mayer

I really don't know anything about this guy except he seems to get a lot of media attention for some reason.

The few songs I have heard from him, I haven't been impressed. Am I missing something? I know this has nothing to do with his playing but I hate that *whispery* type of singing he does.

RS ( yes they are a crap mag but) had him on the cover with Derek Trucks and the title was Guitar Gods....Trucks, yes....Mayer? What gives?

I read somewhere before that he is a very educated musician, but is anybody here impressed with his playing?

I'm not good enough of a player myself to judge his playing, but he sounds ok. My wife put one of his CD's in on a long trip we recently took. Sounded like the same song playing over and over again.

    Not a fan.

Personally, I love the guy's playing, tone and the knowledge and respect of the blues that he has, despite his age, sappy girl songs he's released, or Teen Beat looks. He is sorta the "It" guy right now and he comes off kinda too cool, but he's a pretty smart kid. The guy can play. Check out "Try!" The John Mayer Trio and hear some of his blues stuff.

We train dogs for cattle and sheep herding. They're very different. Sheep are a lot like supermodels - they bunch together, they rattle very easily. Cattle are like drunks at a hockey game - two will want to fight: "Who are you and what's with your badge?"

Two of them will be like: "Leave them alone, let's go see the game." Another one is lost: "Where'd you guys go?" The dog has to deal with all of that. You work them off a whistle. It's the original video game.

Good player can't stand his music at all. But he has some nice chops. He's seems a big sappy puss, but he can play for sure.

Yeah, if you can get by the chickmagnet stuff he's done and his voice, which after awhile kinda erks me, he's really got a killer Stevie tone and some serious chops and arrangement skills on old tunes and even some of the blues stuff he's written. Here's my favorite:

He has some good moments on his latest CD. A strong Stevie Ray Vaughn influence which is alright in my book. Not big on his vocals though. I'll give him credit for this: He dated Jessica Simpson for a few months, presumably had his fun, then moved on.

One other thing: He was part of the (IMO) funniest skit on Dave Chappel's show:

If this guy's got some SRV'esqe stuff, I might give him another try. The CD I listened to was annoying after a while (maybe the voice). He definitely had that Fender bluesy Stevie tone, but the emotion wasn't there at all.

I guess the guy can play pretty damn good. Never saw those clips. Overall, the guy still bugs me though. As stated earlier, he just seem like a huge puss.

Yes he looks like a geek and he acts like a puss boy. But definitely can play, and has that SRV vibe down pretty well.

He's a Berkley College of music grad I think, he is an amazing writer. Have a listen to "Gravity" or "Daughters". I was sold after I saw his performance online after Steve Jobs announced the iPhone in the keynotes video from last year. It was just him and his beat up strat singing "Gravity". He is a very good player in my books because he knows when to let go and when to hold back. I would put him against Dylan and Lennon /Mc Cartney as a songwriter, but if your thing is David Lee Roth, then I doubt you'd like him. His mass appeal is due to his lyrics, and structure. Not everyone wants to listen to a screaming guitar, so his is turned down maybe percieved as a pussy sound. To each his own. He's doing quite well and playing out more than most people on this forum!

I have seen him live a few times, his electric stuff is great , but unfortunately, they just keep marketing his acoustic stuff.

His first CD was the one that was mostly acoustic. The last two (continuum and try) have been really good.

What I love about him is his phrasing. He does some Hendrix covers on the last two discs, Bold As Love and Wait Until Tomorrow, that are really good. The song In Repair off of Continuum, which is a pretty simple song, I absolutely love. I love the solo and the phrasing. I urge you to give it a try.

Now, the first two discs, I really have no use for, nothing special about them.

Well, if we're going by looks, to me, SRV always looked like some Indian Chief meth-addict in some Cherokee Casino, so I try not to let that stand in my way.
