"Set Your Clocks...err, Forward" This Weekend...

Those of you involved in this twice yearly charade already know who you are, this is simply a reminder. Before retiring to bed Saturday night, move your clocks ahead one hour. Sticklers for detail can do it at the prescribed 2 A.M. Sunday morning.

For those severely truamatized by the whole pointless affair, here are some handy survival tips...

    Surviving Daylight Saving Switch

Planning ahead and following a few simple steps can help you minimize the impact of lost sleep when the clocks go ahead one hour on March 9, says the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

The academy offers the following tips to cope with the return to Daylight Saving Time (DST):

    * Begin to readjust your sleep schedule a few days prior to the time change by going to bed an hour earlier.
    * Modify your eating schedule by having dinner one hour earlier.
    * Be careful when driving or operating machinery on the day of the time change.
    * Avoid napping, particularly before bedtime.
    * Keep a light schedule -- such as minimizing driving and avoiding strenuous physical activity -- on the Monday after the time change.
    * Eat properly, stay hydrated and remain physically active.

"The conversion to DST, with its forced loss of one hour of sleep and a change in sleep schedule, can sometimes result in complaints of disrupted daytime functioning," Dr. Ron Kramer, medical director of the Colorado Sleep Disorders Center, said in a prepared statement. "This problem, surprisingly, can last as long as one to two weeks in some people, especially in the 'night-owl' type of person."

But he added that the change can be a good opportunity to examine your sleep patterns and behaviors.

    Thanks, chef.

On The Colbert Report last night Stephen Colbert mentioned the time change this weekend, and I had to check to see if they were showing a re-run. I'm not used to this new extended daylight saving time thing. Seems like we just switched our clocks...

Are people really that thrown by the darn change? Maybe more so up north, I know it hardly registers with me anymore after 44 years. Worst I remember was a few years during the energy crisis when they, I guess went on to Daylight Saving Time during a non-normal period and it would be pitch black while walking to the bus/school. Still, I welcome it with open arms, now sunset won't be until 730P or so, and I don't know how it is for other people, but standing/sitting around at my sons' baseball practices/games, I start to get cold in a hurry once the sun goes down (at least until maybe mid-April) so pushing that back an hour is a-ok in my book!

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' into the future...

I love it when it is light later in the day! I sit on our back deck, look at the lake, ducks, squirrels, birds, ect... fire up the outdoor fireplace and chat with hubby over wine. Ahhhhhhh can't wait!

Solid point there, KRAMER! Perhaps being forwarned, I will not be such a complete doofus this time around.

    Thank you, then and now.

How does one hour effect someone's life that drastically?

God help them if they fly to Australia or Europe.

I think if you have a fairly modern operating system (Windows 2000 & up, perhaps?) and your settings are set correctly (and you've done your updates), shouldn't even have to worry about that.

Since the government changed the actual date of the change last year, for some reason the clock here at the Links did not adapt properly. I had to manually make the change, which is what KRAMER is referring to. It truly was odd, as I'd get all of these out of sync "times" listed on various pages here.
