Default Dungeons & Dragons creator passes away...

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

Anyone remember the old Tom Hank's movie "Mazes and Monsters"...it came out in like '81 or '82 or '83 when D&D was huge and parents were going crazy because of the "mysticism" of the game and how it warps childrens' minds...(kind of like Harry Potter now)...well the movie was about a kid who turns all crazy from playing a D&D type game and starts thinking that in reality he is a dragon slayer...

anyway i just thought of that movie when i saw this post and how it is probably Tom Hank's second best movie (behind "Bachelor Party" of course)

As a teen I loved playing D&D (advanced motherfuckers ok?) and I honestly believe it is the last non computer game that really became a challenge to young people's minds. Talk about using your imagination, I remember when I used to lie awake at night dreaming of the character I had created.

However, I did not become a doctor or a lawyer and I blame this guy personally for my bank situation......blah blah

Cool guy. Cool ideas. Be nice to think he's rolling a twenty sided as we speak, haggling for a night with an ranger prostitute......

I enjoyed D&D big time growing up. That game probably had a bigger influence on games like "Doom," "Myst," etc. than we know.

    R.I.P. Sir.

And "Mazes and Monsters" was a cool flick in it's own way. Haven't seen it in years!

RIP Gary Gygax. Yes, I remember that movie. After I saw it, and my mom (big mistake letting her!), she threw out all of my D&D sets. I was sooo pissed off! I didn't talk to her for a week! LOL. It took me a couple of years just to rebuild the collection I had.

Spent a year playing D&D (advanced as well) while eating Funions and drinking Mountain Dew.

RIP Gary and may you hear The Immigrant Song while entering the gates of Vahalla.

I spent quite a few hours playing D & D in my youth. It's probably a better option using your imagination then parking your butt in front of a tv and playing video games all day. R.I.P.
