Darn, he was only 63, and I did not even know he was in the hospital. What a shame.

    Rest In Peace, BC.

Hot-Rod Builder Boyd Coddington Dies At 63

Legendary Southern California hot-rod builder and reality show host Boyd Coddington died Wednesday at a Whittier hospital at age 63, according to his La Habra-based company.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Coddington was the star of the TLC reality show "American Hot Rod," on which he and his crew overhaul classic cars recovered from junkyards and build custom hot rods from scratch.

The icon of the hot-rod industry and Idaho native got his first car when he was 13 years old. He built his interest in car-building into a multimillion-dollar industry in Southern California, headquartered at his massive garage in La Habra.

Coddington has built vehicles for celebrities such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Michael Anthony of Van Halen and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny.

His cars have won the "America's Most Beautiful Roadster" award seven times. He is a mamber of the Grand National Roadster Hall of Fame, the National Rod & Custom Museum Hall of Fame, the Route 66 Wall of Fame and the Street Rod Marketing Alliance Hall of Fame.

He was named Hot Rod magazine's Man of the Year in 1988. One of his vehicles was also the only hot rod ever displayed on the cover of Smithsonian magazine.

Yea, I saw that a few hours ago. Boyd helped shape the hot rod industry to what it is today.

From the Discovery message board i guess he had heart surgery earlier this month so my guess is complications from that.. He was overweight and kind of always seemed out of breathe now that I look back at the show.. but still damn too young! I'll miss the show!

    WOW.....

From watching American Hot Rod it looked like his shop was messed up, but he knew his cars, that's for sure.

    RIP Boyd.

Wikipedia says a lacerated ulcer, but who knows. The first season or two of American Hot Rod were great.

He'll be sadly missed in the automotive world. I liked his show, although I didn't always agree with the "let's build this entire car from scratch in a week" mentality. I felt that it put too much pressure on the guys who were doing the actual work and it forced them to work crazy hours just to finish them on time. Him and his guys built some awesome Hot Rods though.

Rip Boyd, I hope you're burning rubber.

I always watched the show. I didn't know that Foose worked in BC's shop tho. I watch his show too. And yeah the build it in a week was kinda much for his mechanics but the cars they churned out were amazing. I'm shocked to hear of his passing.

    RIP sir.

I don't think so. The last few people who left Boyd's shop who went to Foose Design looked like it really pissed off Boyd.
