Default Warmoth.com - No longer selling the Axis-style "VW" body?!?

Just visited warmoth.com for the first time in about a week and noticed that the "VW" Axis-syle body is no longer listed.

Anyone know what's up with this?

They were unloading all of their pre-made showcase VWs a few weeks back for $199 each, which is crazy-cheap. I figured they were probably discontinuing the model.

My guess is it wasn't a big seller for them.

What luck. I've been kicking around doing a project guitar since last fall. It went from being a VW body w/ koa top to most recently a simple San Dimas style body, similar to the one that VanLaing posted in http://www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/warm...-t42152p3.html

I'd finally decided it would be cool to do a basic bare-bones single-humbucker superstrat, except with an Axis-style body, kind of like this:

Oh well, looks like it's back to the drawing board again. Anyone know of anywhere else that sells an Axis-style body at a reasonable price?

Did someone ring?? I noticed that a couple of weeks ago too. I am personally happy about it because I will get that business now . I would not be surprised if some of the business I have been doing has already chewed away at theirs. What is funny to me is I started out in the early 90's making that body for myself and friends before they even offered it. And now they don't? bizzare ! I offer mine with the correct contoured heel. Way better! I Have been doing those bodies for years. Got them down pat! I stopped building for a long time. I have got back into it heavy again though. I had brett put a link to my new site on the main page, but obviously people are missing it. ( VanhalenClones.com ) Since I am gradually ramping up, I have had a lot of requests to cover for different variations of that body. I need some time to catch up though If it is a bare bones body with one pickup those will obviously be less money. I have been spending the last year setting up a small mill to supply my own maple and alder and that has been taking up the majority of my time. I will have 6 or so premium maple top bodies done up hopefully in a couple of weeks and I will post them here to show you. I had to team up with someone to be able to produce more. In fact I am on my way out to cut some maple up today!

You will likely get my business at some point. Gotta wait for tax returns. Can you do a AAA QUILTED maple top in either blue or green?

I will have plenty of quilt so no problem. Tax time is tough! Colors and finish I farm it out to a pro I know so that will not be a problem either.

How do you avoid infringing on copyright/trademarks?
Is there anything different that sets your design apart from the real deal?
You mentioned not being able to make necks for this reason, so I'm just curious.

That is the million dollar question and a good one. Warmoth was actually making those necks too. I never bought one to check them out but they had a standard fender heel but the headstock was the same. I was a little shocked at first. I found them in their " miscellaneous" Category. I have changed my mind to go ahead and offer some with or with out the headstock finished. If they come forward and cut me off then so be it. At that point I will alter the head just enough ( about 20% is the rule of thumb ) and still make it look close. The only thing I disagree with Ernie ball on is somewhere along the line they claim they own the 4 + 2 configuration . I could tear apart their supposed trade mark on that one to make a long story short. What is funny to me is no one else in the industry owns their tuning key configuration! NO ONE!

So I take it the bodys are exactly the same?
Shape, routings, neck plates and all?

Correct. Exactly the same. Warmoth only offered their body with a strat heel beauese they did not want to retool. I was told that by a former employee that worked there. That is just lazy to me, but from what I understand that is Ken warmoth for ya, from what I have been told. I have never heard a good comment about him. Anybody can make heel plates from any guitar and not infringe. No company owns their heel plate, 3 bolt 4 bolt 5 bolt 6 bolt......etc........ The only heel that I know is patened is the stephens cutaway that he sold the rights to washburn to use on their guitars. Contoured heels are open game too. You can not own a contoured heel unless it completely changed the function of the guitar.

I called brian good at warmoth personally, and his response on this was that,ERNIE BALL asked that they stop making this model! This is also true of OLP! They too were given the cold shoulder by Erine Ball this January as they decided not to renew OLPs' trademark licensing contract! The only other place I know of that is making these is WWW.USACUSTOMGUITARS.COM in Washington! I don't know if they have a license to sell these, but I'm sure you can contact Ernie Ball directly at 1-866-823-2255 to find out!
