Yes. That's a javelin stuck in his side! French long jumper, Salim Sdiri, struck by Finland's Tero Pitkamaki at a meet in Italy.

I was looking around on youtube the other day, looking at ice hockey, and stumbled across this.

I did some checking first (do not want to see a man's death) and he survived and somehow recovered pretty quickly.

I'm sure all hockey fans must know about this one.

WARNING: This is not pretty. It's as bad a skate injury as I could imagine, but, whilst we're on this grisly subject.............

Clint Malarchuk his carotid artery gets sliced by an opposing players skate, Buffalo Sabres goalie back in th 80's. Very frightening to watch. The scary thing is that it just happened again just a few weeks ago! Richard Zednick of the Florida Panthers carotid artery gets sliced by a teammate right near the goal.. Scarier yet, it happened in Buffalo...same place it had happened before.

They both survived. Malarchuk returned after only 3 months.

Yes. I read about the other guy as well when i was making sure this wasn't a fatal injury.
One note: Apparently Malarchuk left the ice (under his own steam) quickly because he knew his mum would be watching and he didn't want her to see him die.
The coach literally pinched his artery together in the dressing room to keep him alive until the doctors had stitched him up.
In the crowd, nine fainted and two had heart attacks at the sight of it. 3 team mates vomited on the ice in shock.

    Bad day at the office.

Wow, that first hockey clip is brutal!

On the topic, I took a hell of a nasty fall off of my front porch at about 5:30 AM while I was going out to start my car. It had just started to rain, and it was freezing, so I figured I'd get a jump on it and start my car and have it warmed up before the ice got too bad. As I stepped onto the 2nd step down my foot slid out. I had a hold of the handrail, but all that did was twist me sideways for my descent to the rock walkway below, landing on my right side while never touching another step on the way down. Then, 2 days later while walking the dog, she decided to run while I wasn't paying any attention. Same thing, same side, just not as far down that time. I'm hurting just a little bit right now.
