Default Cool Story Of The Week - Florida Man Builds Own Submarine

I thought we'd take a break from dead babies and home foreclosure and remind ourselves why America and Americans are cool.

So I give you a man and his dream submarine/boat:

    Sub dream becomes a reality

    BY T. DEVON ROBINSON

COURTESY PHOTOS Reynolds Marion sits on the Hyper-Sub prototype, a submersible powerboat, on Kingsley Lake in Florida.
Length: 34 feet Width: 13 feet, 6 inches Draft: 24 inches Height: 6 feet, 10 inches Seats: Four, plus pilot Fuel capacity: 262.5 gal

As a child growing up near Ford in Dinwiddie County, Reynolds Marion had an idea for winning the Great James River Raft Race in Richmond: a submarine.

“Since I was 11 or 12, I came up with the idea of a sub,” he said. “It was a childhood dream, one I obsessed over.”

Earlier in the decade, Marion decided to close his automobile restoration and customization business in Lake Butler, Fla., and began to build.

All he had was his designs, a group of people dedicated to help his dream become a reality and what he had taught himself in science and engineering of submersibles.

“Nobody thought it would really happen,” he said.

Five years later, on Nov. 13, 2007, Marion and his build team at Marion Hyper-Submersible Powerboat Design, LLC., had their first successful test dive of the Hyper-Sub, a submersible powerboat.

“We think the world would look back at that date like the date the Wright Brothers flyer took off,” he said.

The Hyper-Sub is a 34-foot hybrid craft that can function as a boat and a submarine. He planned it as a general purpose submarine that would have a variety of uses including tourism and security.

“It an entirely new type of vehicle,” Marion said.

Out of the five years to produce the prototype, Marion said two were spent finding investors. There were many skeptics, including engineers who said that his concept could not be done.

“For every one investor, you had to talk to 20,” he said.

The construction of the roughly $1.5 million prototype Hyper-Sub, Fathom, also raised eyebrows in Lake Butler, Fla., a town of less than 2,000 in Union County where it was constructed.

“Everyone thought we were nuts,” he said. “As time has gone by, people have gotten more excited. There are huge crowds where the boat goes.”

Since the initial testing, Marion’s craft has made 21 dives and he is currently making plans to go forward with a production model and a public unveiling.

“The next thing for the boat is doing a bow modification to get the surface speed out of it that we would like,” he said.

Overall, Marion credits the people he encountered as he grew up in Dinwiddie for helping him keep his childhood dream alive.

“The folks around there were always reinforcing,” he said.

He also gave a special thanks to the Dinwiddie school system. “They told me I could one day achieve what I wanted to achieve. It carried me into this.”

At this point, the fact that he had built the submarine he had been thinking of for nearly his entire life has sunk in, he said.

“Believe it or not, it really hasn’t allowed me to reflect on everything,” Marion said. “I still have a big job to do. Every once in a while, I look at the boat and realized we have made history.”

What he has thought about is how creating the Hyper-Sub was called an impossibility as it was being developed.

“This is definitely a divinely-inspired story,” he said. “How else do you explain a kid from Dinwiddie County with a high school education doing something engineers said couldn’t be done?”

It's inspirational "never say die...follow your dreams" guys like this that remind you it's worth getting out of bed in the morning....

.........and then phoning in sick so you can do something more worthwhile instead.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.
