    Default Guitarist Magazine?

Is anyone else as hooked on this gem as I am? It's a british guitar mag that blows the stateside rags out of the water (IMO). It's coverage is much more diverse and the writing is much better than anything coming out of the US right now. Also, there's tons of really useful reviews in each issue.

I used to buy it occasionally, when I could find it in the US, because it's about $13 here. However, my wife (and this is why I know I married the right one) got me a two-year subscription for Xmas! Anyone else, stateside or otherwise, into this mag?

I also am a subscriber. It's heads above anything here in the states. My son reads the "Total Guitar" mag and it's even better than anything stateside.

Their ok i mean Guitar World has that "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Dear Guitar Hero". Plus better pics. But you cannot beat TG and Guitarist in terms of the detail of their reviews simply amazing!!

its funny coz i'm from england and i always rush to get my hands on the limited number of american mags i find over here...lol
but i wll say that guitarist is a great mag...although this month in their "50 greatest tones ever" article i have to say....jack white (pos 9) above clapton (pos 10) and gary moore (pos 33)...how the fuck does jack white come above those 2 he doesnt even belong in the top 100 (imo) i mean cummon gary moore has perhaps the finest live tone of any guitarist on the planet...but otherwise its a great mag

I've been getting Guitarist for over 20 years now and nothing else comes close. We get all the US mags here, whilst there good on featuring artists, their gear reviews never seam to analise the product from a buyers perspective. Guitarist tells it like it is, pros and cons, sounds, features, rival products, then rate it... if they don't like something they'll tell you, even if the company has taken a full page advert to promote it
Also has a wide variety of musical styles and you don't have to wade through 30 pages of ads before the reading starts, usually about 195 pages of good stuff, the only down side is the price, must be pretty pricey in the states?

Btw, the cd's usually have sound demos of the gear reviewed, plus other things. The demos are really useful to keep for reference, your ears are better than words LOL.

Now where is my commission, Guitarist

A few years back I was up for the job of staff writer at Guitarist Magazine. They were based in Ely, near Cambridge, at the time, and I travelled over from Northern Ireland for an interview.

Eddie Allen, the editor at the time, conducted the interview, and he spent the first hour of it telling me how hard his job was. Then when it finally came my turn to sell myself, I went to pieces. Something clicked inside my head and I realised how massive this job was, what a huge opportunity I had, and all the people I would meet - and I lost the power of speech.

I literally could not form words.

Needless to say, I didn't get the job. I still regret it sometimes, though I've got to say, he was offering a rotten salary.

Still, it's a great mag, and always has been. I don't read guitar mags often these days, but when I do get the urge, it's usually Guitarist I'll pick up.

Agreed. The reviews are extremely thorough and unbiased, regardless of whether or not a company advertises with the magazine. You would have never seen that embarassing multi-page ad for the 5150 III...I mean "interview" with EVH and Matt Bruck in Guitarist. I also appreciate the the diverse styles they cover and find myself reading about musicians that I'ver never even heard of before. It's about $13 in the states, but it has about twice as much content as our magazines and seemingly less ads. Definitely worth the money.

I remember seeing a "Guitarist" poster with Eddie holding a striped-up Kramer that had a pointy headstock. I guess the mag would have been around '86-'88. Has anyone else here seen that?

Giutarist is an awesome mag for someone after just a broad brush of the world of guitar on a month to month basis......I got myself in there a few years ago which was cool, but I digress........

.....Don't know about you guys US side - but I find Guitar World just garbage these days...it used to be my favourite guitar mag. I guess it's UK equivalent is Total Guitar......basically heavy metal magazines with some reviews of guitar stuff....

I haven't seen Guitar Player for a while...is it still around?
Ed: Actually, the last record I bought was by a band called Brand X
Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?
Dave: Look at that ankle - dirty girl!

I find Guitar Player too "old". I'm starting t fit into that catergory, but I don't feel Guitar Player represents me well. I prefer the reviews more so than the tablature. With Guitar Player, I feel I need a decoder ring to understand their descriptions and a trust fund to purchase some of the items they review.

Guitarist seems to not sugar coat their products. They tend to cover all price ranges, not just low end and ultra high end. They also provide descriptions that don't leave the reader guessing.

Terms like "Marshall roar" and "Hiwatt punch" fit Guitar Player. Descriptions like "Metallica approved metal" "does the southern rock thing", to me, are more descriptive. Sometimes Guitar Player is a tad elitist. While "does Metallica approved metal" leaves little to the imagination, "Hiwatt punch" can be subjective. It may also be difficult for a first timer to understand what the "Hiwatt punch" or "Marshall Roar" sound is if he or she doesn't have an extensive background in amplifiers.

Guitar World does a pro's and con's style review, but they tend to be all over the map with their reviews. They hardly ever give a bad review. It's as if they feel obligated to rave about every piece of equipment reviewed. On a side not, that Paul character who demo's equipment for the DVD of Guitar World drives me crazy. I'd like to slap the little shit.

Do any of you all remember Guitar Shop. It was primarily a equipment review and small interview magazine. They would have 2 reviewers review a product and give a more subjective review. It's a shame they closed the doors on that mag.

Now, back to the "tonal complexities and 6L6 power of my channel cloning, flying leads, with pc board mounted tube sockets, and complex mid range of my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier"!!

What's funny is that in the current (August 2009) edition of Guitarist - which is fantastic by the way: Satch, Hammett and B.B. - they let it slip that Guitar Player is their stateside sister mag. I was shocked because they're worlds apart in terms of quality - and by that I mean that Guitarist is far superior. I wonder if one owns the other or if, like so much else these days, they're both owned by a larger conglomerate?

I used to get it all the time at this little international magazine shop that stocked some of the best East German porn this side of Kandahar.....but that's not important right now. But back to Guitarist....I remember it was a great mag. Glad to here it's still great. I'll have to dig around and see if anywhere else sells it, or just pony up and get a subscription!
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.
