Toshi Hiketa working for Dave on tour?

I've been meaning to post this ever since the Little Rock show on 1/30, but at that show (Little Rock), I had front row seats. And I am 98% certain that I saw Toshi Hiketa (who played rhythm guitar in Dave's solo band for the past few years, and is in a side project with Ray Luzier, Dave's drummer), working for Dave at the show, handing him his "props" (his hats, his bullhorn for SGMAD, etc).

Actually, it looked he was tagging along with the guy that normally does it, "training" for the job (the "guy who normally does it", would point to the set list and then hand "Toshi" a specific prop, kind of like he was showing him the ropes).

Has anyone else noticed this at the past few shows? Toshi is quite an accomplished guitarist in his own right, and it just struck me as a bit odd that he would be working as a "stagehand" of sorts.

Another thing I am kind of erked about when watching this show....even the...random stage acts are all STAGED....I remember at the beginning of the tour...I was so damn tired of seeing that damn straw cowboy hat being thrown up on stage by some random person...the same hat....almost always during Jump.....

I also like when Dave is holding the mega-phone and somebody is holding the microphone for him lol......

Brian Young had been Dave's guitarist for a long time. I wonder if he let Brian and/or his whole band go before the VH tour, or if he retained them on salary like what Sammy did during the '04 tour.

I mentioned this to Jetguy in November. Funny how the minute Dave is back in VH you don't hear him say anything about his solo band members and what they are going to do now.

At least Sammy put them on his payroll and was ready to put them on his payroll if he got back with VH.

Not saying Dave isn't doing that...but nobody has said a word about his solo band.

Just more evidence that people never cared much about Dave's solo career.

I thought Ray Luzier (sp?) left before the reunion.

After seeing DLR solo for 4 shows, he treats his band like hired hands. If he could get away with pre-recorded music, he would probably do it. That is probably why the only person that matters to him is Eddie right now. If EVH went to him before this tour and said I am having my 16 year old son play bass and the west coast rep for Smoking Loon play drums, DLR would say,"Fire up the booozely-bop bus."
I don't have a cool signature. Deal with it!

He did. Jimmy DeGrasso was playing drums for Dave in 2006. Brian Young was working on some side projects in L.A. But it's not like they toured 12 months out of the year or did alot of studio time. I'm sure all those guys have moved on.

Man - all you ever do is rip dave and the current show and prop up sammy! Get over it! In other threads you said you loved the show - than here you rip it for being staged. of course it is staged to a certain extent it is a big time tour and they want to give everyone seeing them the best possible show. if you want to see "improv" go to some open mic nite in toronto.

last i heard, Brian was gigging in Austin, Texas.

Toshi's website hasn't been updated lately. usually it's full of clinic dates, but everything listed is from 2007.

I've got no beef with Dave and his props.

Whether you like them or not, it certainly gives folks something to talk about.

Yeah like talking about how those chains he carries during UNCHAINED are probably one of the gayest props ever apart from the ones used at a Cher show

Well, aside from some stage patter, has Dave spoken about anything to anyone on the current tour?

How on Earth did you come to the logic-defying conclusion that since Dave is not doing interviews as of yet (and perhaps will not be allowed to in the future), and thus not talking to or about anything, that people did not care about his solo career? Christ, if this is evidence to you, I wish you'd have been sitting on the O.J. jury.

I'm just comparing....I should have edited that comment as I didn't mean..."Nobody cared"....

    All I meant was....

When Sammy went on Tour with VH in 2004 people were asking him about what his solo band was going to do....
When Dave was being rumored to/and once he was back in VH....people seemed to have forgotten that he was in a solo band....

That's all I was saying....however I shouldn't have come to the conclusion that nobody cared about Dave's solo career..... ....all the people who are going to this tour saying "Dave IS Van Halen"...they cared about his solo career

Yeah I had a great time at the show. And I'm not ripping on Dave...I'm just kidding around...read my response to Chef and you'll see me rectify what I said about, "People not caring about Dave's solo career"....

But I have yet to have gone to a concert that has been as rehearsed as this one....I'm just stating my opinion and what I saw.....

The reason why it is so staged is because at each different night they expect new people to be showing up...who have never read reviews of the show or have seen the show before....they're marketing this to the casual fan...who when they see one of these shows will be GENUINELY surprised by what they are watching....VH is not expecting the casual fans to be like us bozo's who read reviews and see pictures from other shows....

I mean VH played 2 nights in Toronto and they were exactly the same......VH thinks that the 2nd night ushered in a whole new group of people who had never seen the show or heard about it?....They're stupid if they think that...
