Default Dave's Solo Career Not that Bad

I always read on here how Dave's solo career was garbage and compared to Sammy it was no contest.
I don't know but I think I would take the numbers he put up as per sales anyway. I realize sammy has been solo for alot longer and put out a larger volume but here are the Gold and Platinum #'s

    Sammy Platinum albums:
    VOA
    Standing Hampton

    Dave Platinum albums:
    Crazy for the Heat
    Eat em and Smile
    Skyscraper

    Platinum Video Longform:
    David Lee Roth Certified 07/18/1990

    Gold Albums:
    Hagar - Unboxed
    Roth - A L'il ain't Enough

So as far as these numbers are concerned you might say Roth has the greater success as a solo artist.
Neither could sell an album today but Sammy is still out there trying.
You would have thought in just sheer time and volume Hagar would have destroyed the Diamond One but the numbers don't lie.

It also wasn't very good. Imagine if those 3 albums you mentioned with Ed's guitar instead of Vai's thin wacky sound (extremely hair bandish) at that time too.

Both singers had some great solo tunes.

Well for one...Crazy from the heat is only an EP. And it was released at the height of Van Halen's popularity. And really his level of sales earlier can partly be contributed to Van Halen's popularity where as the same can't be said for Hagar. He did that on his own. I don't know if Dave really ever released any songs that would be considered rock classics like Hagar has. Songs that everybody, fans or non-fans alike, knows to this day. Just some counterpoints to your arguments.

As for personal opinions I'm not a fan of Dave's solo stuff nor am I an expert so I can't really comment on that.

i don't think either one of them wrote all that many classics that people know to this day. Sammy's most recognizable tune would be I Can't Drive 55 and last I checked that won't be making the list of top 50 rock tunes ever written. Dave's most recognizable solo hit was a cover (California Girls). Without VH both of these guys would currently be residing in the "where are they now?" part of town.

Three straight platinum albums seems impressive but when you consider that his last VH album sold over 10 million copies and VH's first album without him sold over 6 million, suddenly 1 million is not as impressive. In fact, it's a little disappointing. Worse, as he grew further removed from his VH days, his star rapidly diminished.

As for Sam, he never acheived massive success. In fact, you could probably say that he never even reached the level of success that Dave did from 1985-88. However, Sam was able to carve out a solo career seperate and different from his VH tenure. He built a following that didn't primarily consist of guys who remembered him from VH and went to his shows only to hear Poundcake. These fans remain loyal, even 13 years after the last Van Hagar album.

I think Sam is the clear winner.

I was just going to say the same thing. The average fan would know only one Sammy song--I Can't Drive 55.

I think you would have to compare them in categories: success and quality.

It's tough to compare the different successes because Dave's was post-VH and Sam's was pre-VH, as someone mentioned.

I think quality is also pretty tough because it's subjective.

I enjoy both. I really like the diversity of Sammy's music, but Dave's had more of an edge.

    I don't think so.

As a matter of fact, I don't even think it's close between those two songs as far as recognizabilty.

Interesting. I prefer Sammy's solo stuff but prefer the six pack over van hagar anyday of the week. There's something more soulish about Sammy's solo stuff than Roth's solo stuff yet there's something more soulish and hard edged about the original VH than anything Roth did post VH. (maybe it's that wierd thin sound of Vai's that somebody mentioned)

I find this thread to highlight one important thing. it shows the signifigance of EVH and how niether of these boys would have done much sans eddie.

compare this fizzle thread to a EVH vs. Hendrix thread. There's no comparison. It's all about Eddie at the end of the day.
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

You can't dismiss Daves contribution to the sucess of Van Halen. He helped, in a big way, to put the band on the map, as much as any original memeber.(EVH)
Yes, he rode the wave of sucess to solo popularity, but so did the band and w/ that, Sam did too.

    or conversely.... by your logic....

dave and sam fans could argue that on HIS own ed really hasnt done a whole lot of anything as a solo artist.... (except some porn music or whatever)....

what is a repeated thought on here is the old "if it werent for (dave / sam / ed) the others would be nowhere" and what everyone should accept is that NONE OF THEM, and that includes dear edward, would be ANYWHERE if they all didnt have each other....

they all contributed to the entity that is van halen and they all inspired each other to play and sing in ways much different than if they had been left to their own devices....

to me its not all about anyone, its about 'van halen' which last i checked, was more than one individual....

    just a thought.... lol
